Hi guys

Decided the next lens will be a walk about one after much discussion on my last thread.

I went into Jessops today to try a 24 - 70 2.8 and no surprise they didnt stock it. But they did have a 24 - 105 i was allowed to play with. Obviously taking a picture of one of jessops printers isnt really a good test but i was impressed with the picture result shooting at 400ISO. I can stretch as far as a 24 - 70 2.8 but i want to know in your opinions which is the better lens ??

What make we talking here.
If its nikon hold off till you get the 24-70.
Its a lovely lens...

i have been lucky enough to have used both and although a bit heavy and having a awfully large hood the 24-70 f2.8L is just head and shoulders above the 24-105.
 
Totally up to you, both very good lenses, the question is what do you want more; the extra range on the 105 or the F2.8 on 70? I've got the 105, it very good and very sharp and the IS is a useful add on. However I now wish I'd bought the 2.8 as I would love that extra f stop. Lol, bet that hasn't helped your descision at all.
 
I had a 24-105 but sold it - not for a 24-70 though!

So that doesn't really help either :)
 
I used to own both and now own just the 24-105. The 24-105 is super sharp wide open, the 24-70 is pretty good @ f2.8 but benefits from a little stopping down. For me the extra reach and the IS is more important than the f2.8 - you can hand hold the 24-105 in lower light than the 24-70. If you want to blur the background you can get more background blur with the 24-105 @ 105mm f4 than you can with the 24-70 @ 70mm f2.8.

I think for most people the 24-105 is a better choice and perhaps add a fast prime (50mm f1.4) for when the situation requires. If you are obsessive about bokeh or are regularly capturing moving objects in low light then perhaps choose the 24-70.

Personally I use the 24-105 as a general walkaround (and have the Sigmalux with me too) - if I want wonderful bokeh for portraits at a longer FL I reach for the 135L or the 70-200.

if its intended for the wedding work you were discussing in your previous thread then the 24-70 f2.8 every time. Those extra stops of light will be invaluable

I have had both and sold my 24-105L. They are both very good lenses, but you really need to decide what you want it for.

If for weddings then the 24-70L everytime, but, if you genuinely want a walk around lens until such times as there is a 24-105L f2.8 IS then the 24-105L does a brilliant job. You can always take the ISO up by a stop on the odd occasion when you really need it.
 
I have both the 28-70 and 24-105. for what I am using it for I am leaning towards the 24-105. one has to go so a bit more playing before I make my mined up it reall is a hard choice as one is faster and the other has IS and more range
 
Thanks for all the help guys. I will mainly being shooting at weddings as a second tog so i reakon the stops of light will be the best option but so many people say how sharp the 24 - 105 is but seeing as its L glass it would lead me to assume you wont tell a massive difference between the lens's in that respect?
 
24-70mm can be a bit soft at 60-70mm wide open, but OK for head and shoulders. 28-50mm are ideal though, 24mm is sharp but has distortion. There could be some variation from copy to copy (actually a lot) so keep that in mind. It may be an L, but be really gentle with it, it is easy to knock it out of calibration.

24-105mm is a nice lens and really sharp. I still think I should have bought this one as I use [all] my flashes everywhere where I could think of.

How about Canon 50mm f/1.4 and f/1.8 for the f-stops? f/2.8 is not that fast, and lack of IS with this lens actually shows up very easily. Flash is still the order of the day with both zooms.
 
Thanks for the advice daugirdas. Is the lens that easy to knock off calibration. Im very careful with my equipment but needless to say has knocked my confidence slightly with this lens.
 
i was told by the guy in jessops that with a speedlight the 24 - 105 is amazing shooting. Im too novice with flash though but would love to learn how to fill a room with fill in flash and my subjects to make the lighting perfect. Is there any real secret???

24-105mm is not as sharp on paper, but at f/5.6-8 it should be better when used handheld due to IS. There is less QC variation with the lens.

Bounce off the ceiling and add +2/3 to +1 flash compensation. Many purists might disagree, but ISO 200-400 is a nice way to extend the flash range, while there is only minimal increase in noise. You could even bounce 3 or more flashes in wireless ETTL mode, add backlight and all sorts of crazy things

If you want to do it the 'proper' way, get EZ-box softboxes for your flashes and set them up at 45 degrees up high aiming over people heads.
 
Thanks daugirdas will keep that in mind. I need to get myself a proper flash and make good use of it. Might need to read reviews a tad more in depth so i can get the right lens. Only 22 days to go...but hey whos counting :thumbs:

I'm sure he did, after all it's the one he had to sell you.

You've had a few wedding photographers advise you to go for the faster lens. That's what you should do. An October wedding with an f4 zoom will give you problems, no question about it.

The lack of IS should be the least of your worries here. It won't stop motion and at weddings people move.

Thats all well and good, but we're talking about a wedding here. If you tried to set that lot up during the ceremony then you'd get fantastically short shrift from the celebrant, most wont allow you flash full stop.

Thinking about it if somebody was second shooting for me I'd give them short shrift if they set up multiple off camera flashes in the manner you're talking about, but thats just me.

Stick with the faster lens, you won't regret it.

I have decided to go 24 - 70 as i would need the stops of light more on my side than IS.

f2.8 all the way, so my vote goes to the 24-70L. I used to own the 24-105 but sold it here to fund for the brick. I don't see much CA at 24mm on the 24-70L but its very obvious on the 24-105.
The only complain I have is the weight.
 
IS can't freeze your subject's motion.... f2.8 is where it's at, any day of the week :)
