24-70 L softness

ive just been playing around with camera. (its raining nothing else to do)
anyway i noticed that the canon 50mm 1.8 seemed to beat my 24-70L for sharpness
its seems to be more when its on a tripod and pointing downwards at an angle
cant find my lens chart so i tried a page of text the 50 seemed sharp alll accross the page were as the 24-70 dropped off pretty quick after the focus point
wasnt just a bit but a hell of a lot
i tried a similar test with camera not at an angle and didnt seems no were near as bad
whats happening
 
ok not the best pics ever but straight out of camera, converted from raw (nothing else done)
apart from 100% crop, tried to make em both identical

both shot on tripod with cable release mirror lock at f8 and centre focus point on same area of image

tried f16 but same

Hi Mark,

Was the 24-70 set to roughly 50mm when you did the test too ?
 
Another thought, can you set the AF Microadjustment for each lens on the 5D MKII like you can on my 7D ?

If so have you tried doing it for your 24-70?
 
yes the lens was set at 50mm
the 5dmk 11 does have the micro adjustment on it
ive not a clue what it does
i set it to plus 20 its max setting and then to minus 20 its min setting
no difference in either, including one i did with no adjustment.
just noticed the 17-40 was a bit similar to the way the 24-70 was working

that may be my cropping . although there is a slight difference between the 50mm and the 50mm on the 24-70
but no matter how i do it. tripod or hand held that 50mm 1.8 seems to sharper
