24-70 on Crop

Just after some experiences of going (ideally) from 18 at the wide end to 24mm. My go to lens at the moment is the 18-70mm which tbh punches well above its weight. I'm keen to get something faster though and like the idea of the 24-70/2.8 (although couldn't afford the nik version any time soon).

How have those that have changed to the longer lens got on? Any suggestions for alternatives to the Nik?

This is just for crop sensor btw (d300 in this case).

Thanks all

I have the Sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 and the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 and I can say that the Tamron is a beaut of a lens for the price. I moved to the Nikon 24-70mm F/2.8 and can see why they charge £1200 for it. The difference from a kit lens to the Tamron was amazing, if you have the cash go for the Tamron ( I couldn't get on with the Sigma )

thanks Rob,
did you find the 28mm wide end limiting at all?

The change to a longer lens is a personal one and depends on your style. There are (nearly) as many who are happy with 24mm as their wide end walkabout on a crop as those that aren't.

I suggest you take a look at the pics you take and split them into their different focal lengths and see if you'd miss the 18-24 range and decide on a way forward from that. There is a plugin for lightroom by Jeffrey Friedl which will do this for you if you use LR that is....

No worries Chris, I guess all lenses have their limitations, depends on what you are taking shots of. With the difference between 24mm and 28mm you learn to live with it and move closer/further away. I think the main benefit is the IQ (image quality ) AND having the ability to go to F/2.8, in terms of DOF.

Yeah, I've had a look through on NX View and any pics wider than 24mm are few and far between and quite often I would have achieved a better pic if I'd framed it closer in. I guess I'm answering my own question there.

Another one here who gets along fine with 24 mm at the wide end. I do keep my Nikon 18-55 mm kit lens for its wide end for those occasions when I do want to go wider (and it's in silver too which looks amazingly craptastic on my black-bodies D200 :P) but for most purposes, Sigma 24-70 F2.8 does the job. Not as amazing as the Nikon version, but at fraction of the price, suits me fine.

how do you find the sharpness on the siggy mustanir?

I have an 18-70 I originally bought with my D70 quite a few years ago but just hardly used the wide end. I now have a D7000 and recently bought a 24-70 for the extra DoF and obviously image quality...I didn't really consider the 17-55 too hard. The 36-105 equivalent on a crop suits me nicely and is better suited to my needs.

I had the 17-55 nikon and found it too short for my d300. Wentbfor the tamron and now the nikon 24-70 and very happy. Rarely need wider.

Funnily enough cambsno, it was a post of yours that got me thinking. Taking pics of my sprogs is what I love.

how do you find the sharpness on the siggy mustanir?

It's ok enough, obviously not biting sharp at f2.8, but perfectly adequate at f4 and up. Given that I do not shoot professionally nor do I do big enlargements (not from digital anyway) shooting at f2.8 when I need to and sharpening a bit in post does me just fine. The lens is good for the price, but you do get what you pay for.

One of the many really good things about my recently-departed D300s was the Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8 lens on the front of it. Equivalent of 24-70 on FF. Seemed ideal to me. Less costly than a 24-70 too.

I've been using a 24mm prime as my main lens and my widest lens on a a crop body for about 2 years. There are a few times I wish for a wider lens, but generally it's a lovely focal length which suits me very well.
As someone already pointed out this pov varies from person to person. The best way to get a feel for it is to use another lens and limit the focal range.

I have been looking at the 24-70 sigma, was a bit put off by reviews saying it was a bit soft when wide open. I also had worries about it on a cropped sensor. I think I might look at a better 18-55 to replace my kit lens at some point.

My Siggy 24-70 is hardly off the camera. I use it for about 90% of my photos I would say and then get the 10-20 out for something a bit different.

I've taken a lot of pictures of my niece with it and have had some really nice results (well to my amateur eyes anyway).

I have just bought a 7d with 24-70L as there was a deal too good to turn down. Awaiting delivery but in 2 minds about whether to keep the 24-70. I already have the wide covered with a 11-16 and 16-50. And for me the 16-50 is pretty much spot on for a crop. But think I will give it a few weeks to decide which lens will go.

Well I ended up selling the 16-50mm and keeping the 24-70mm. Still not sure I won't miss the wide end but love the quality of the 24-70.
