24-70mm for portraits?

Before Christmas I was lusting after the 24-70 and 70-200 zooms but I managed to convince myself to stick with my 30/50/85 primes for now, given the weight difference and financial outlay. However, after a session with my 4 year old in the park with my 85mm I think I need to invest in a zoom.

I'm about to start doing family portrait sessions - outdoors natural light stuff. I'm thinking 24-70mm 2.8 to start with and I'm tempted to go with Nikon rather than Sigma. It's quite an investment though. Any experiences/advice would be very welcome before I take the plunge.

(I've got a D90 at the mo)

Go for the Nikon, you wont regret it!

Super sharp, great length, perfect for portraits. Also if you ever upgrade to FX, you'll have an awesome combo.
 
i was out yesterday in the park with my neices and had the 70-200 with me first time i've really used it and was just gobsmacked by it.
 
I've seen amazing shots with the 70-200 but I found I needed to be able to go wider than I could with the 85mm so I'd be concerned that that would be an issue, plus I need to be fairly close in order to interact with the kids and the additional weight is another issue.
 
i have not long had my Nikkor 70-200mm and all i can say is ...WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! best lens i have ever owned ..(and the most expensive too!!)

my next lens will be the nikkor 24-70 2.8..i have the sigma 24-70 f2.8 and its ok but not a patch on any nikkor .. i get better photos with my Nikkor 12-24 f4 !!
