Afternoon all,

Most my photography has been outside with 85mm and 70-200 up until recently. Increasingly I'm left short indoors where it would be useful to have a 24-something lens. Don't think the quality or cost of the Canon 24-70 is justifiable for the limited use it would get, but 2.8 or IS would be good of course!

I know very little about Sigma et al so would appreciate thoughts and suggestions. 24 at the wide end isn't particularly essential, just trying to indicate the type of lens I'd be interested in.

Uses

- family snaps indoors
- walk-around 'holiday' lens

Specs:

- Small (close to the 85mm 1.8 in size terms would be ideal)
- Image quality isn't really an issue
- Must work on full-frame.

Many thanks!
James.

Easy. Canon 24-105L. One of the single best reasons for using Canon full frame IMHO - there's nothing else so all-round good available anywhere.

Thanks - hmm yes I did have one of those a while ago.

Can I use an F4 lens OK with a matt screen fitted?

Is the 28-135 IS worth a look?

It's pushing the limits a tad IMO

At f/8, it'll not look any different from your old 24-105. The downside are soft corners wide open on a FF body (fine on a crop though)
Physically not too much difference in size albeit a fair bit lighter.

If you're looking for something compact then have a think about the 28-105.....does the job for around £200 and a compact little thing into the bargain.

If you don't mind losing 4mm at the wide end, the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di is excellent value for money. I've shot with the Nikon mount version and been very impressed with it. Relatively cheap, very compact for a f/2.8 lens and it offers a very good optical performance too.

I have the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 XR Di, and whilst it is excellent on a crop body, the corners are softer and suffer from vignetting wide open on FF. It's still worth trying one out though.

Many thanks for the replies!

So I think we're saying there are really three options,

* 28-105mm and accept it's limitations because of the low price
* Tamron 24-75 f2.8
* 24-105mm f4l - accepting that it will be a bit tricky with the matt viewfinder

Tamron sounds like it might fit the bill then - will do some reading up!

Cheers

I've always liked the Tokina Pro range... So two possibilities (used as they don't do these any more for FF):

AT-X 280 AF PRO (28-80 f/2.8)
AT-X 235 AF PRO (20-35 f/2.8) - and I've got one of these... it's a bit soft at 2.8 but great above this.

Just my 2p worth....

Alistair
