Heading over to the light side [well, it makes a change from the usual on here....]! Anyway, after my abstinence I'm nearly ready to splurge some cash on a new SLR and lens setup. It's interesting, looking in from the sidelines and walking around the shops knowing pretty much what I want...

I want a wide angle macro [loved using it on the D-Lux, and realise that most of my keeper 17-50 shots were taken right at this focal length. So, a 24mm [35 on crop, classic standard wide] and a 300mm prime are all I need. I'm pretty much sold on the 1000D, as all I need is a central cross-type AF sensor, centre-weighted metering and ISO/Exposure compensation buttons.

But I'm undecided on the 24mm. My options are the Canon 24mm L [pricey.. worth it?], the Sigma 24/1.8 [close focus ability is a huge deal for me], the 24mm/2.8 [any better than the 24-70 or even the Tamron 17-50/2.8?] and I'd even consider some of the nearby lengths... the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 or the Canon 28mm/1.8 are alternates.

Any prime users with experience at hand here?

the 24/2.8 isn't really worth it imo, i don't think it is sharper than the 24-70L and its not faster.

24L is worth it if you can afford it.

I just bought a 35L, its one of the Holy Trinity for good reasons :) But i am on Full Frame so that might not suit you.
