275 quid for a screw that takes too long

My canon 300 2.8l was sent to canon last tuesady 15th feb... under the tripod collar a screw came loose and sheered off as i used the collar method to turn the camera portrait to landscape..

They tell me its 275 quid total to repair.. I got the estimate thursday.. phoned to tell them to go ahead and expressed my shock at the price... computers playing up and can i phone back fri.. so i do fri morning..

Its now the following thursday and they phone me to say part required (presumably the screw) and it should be fixed and wiht me early next week..

the reason they phone me is to see if i would like a loan lens? wow thats a first ..

thats one very expensive and long screw.....
 
Surely even Canon can't charge that much for a screw!!

Maybe they couldn't get the screw out so they are replacing the part it fits into.

Nice of them to offer you a loaner though, top service :)

at least now I know they do loan equipment and you dont even ahve to apply :)
 
But they screw you first on the repair cost!

Now you wait to see what they actually had to replace.

Tony next time take it into you local Jewellers, theres one in my town who takes on all sorts of repairs to Cameras, Lenses, Tripods etc, etc. he'll tackle anything which doesnt need Canon/Nikon/Sony et al specific parts.

Ive just bought a Nikon 400mm with the stock foot and the Longer foot, i sheared the thread on one of the small allen bolts trying to replace the stock foot, the guy drilled it out, re tapped the thread and replaced the foot for me, at the same time i had him fit 2 brand new screws on the hood (The Nikon 400mm is a 2 part hood), the screws slightly stretch the hood over time and become impossible to fully tighten, he replaced my existing ones with 2 brand new ones slightly longer which came from the innards of a clock and which now tighten down superbly.

Left the lens with him for 2 hours and came back to a bill for a grand total of £30

Jewellers have all the necessary tiny tools, screws, clamps etc, etc to take on small jobs like this.

I had thought to do that gary.. have a bloke in burnley who does bit o camera repairs.. But I was supposed to be selling it..so sent to canon for fix and the once over..clean bill of health for the buyer.. money ready buying it this weekend buyer..

then i did a game at stanley a night match and realised even wiht me mkIV ..the 400mm needs a shutter of 640 on a crop body if i want to get the shot and wiht those lights i couldnt get it without going iso 8000 and above... which is fine unless your shooting one end of pitch to other... so now I gotta keep the 300 which will be happy at 320mm and I had to go back on my word re the sale.. which I feel really bad about but buyer (off here) understands... still feel bad though :(

with the 300mm i can sit halfway and get shots from both ends iso 3200 shutter 320

its the shutter needs to be = focul length + crop thats knackered me up..
