Hi

A friend of mine is looking for a prime lens around the 28 / 30mm focal length. He's using a Canon body, but isn't bothered if lens is Canon or other, only requirement is a fast lens - 2.8 or faster.

This isn't a range I've used, so does anyone have any experience of this size prime lens ??

BTW, he already has 50mm F1.8

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I can say the Sigma 30mm 1.4 is very good if you get a good copy. Beware it's for a crop body only though. I've had a bad Sigma before but my prime is really good.

Assuming it's for a crop body I too can recommend the Sigma 30mm f1.4. If it's for a FF body or future FF compatibility Sigma do a 28mm f1.8 and although I haven't used it I've read good things about it and I do own the similar 20mm f1.8 and I think it's really good.

On a crop body I personally think that this is a more useable length than 50mm.

The Canon 28/1.8 is very nicely made, USM and all that. It's rather soft wide open but improves a lot even if you stop down just a little bit. I sold mine when I got the 17-55 f2.8. Sort of missing it a little now...

According to most reviews the Sigma 30 and the Canon 28 share the same weaknesses - the sigma is a bit wider but the Canon also works on full frame.

I think that the Canon 28mm is actually a bit wider than the Sigma 30mm :)

I have the Sigma 30mm 1.4, hadn't used it too much but took it out yesterday and realised what an absolute cracking lens it really is. I'll be using this more than the Nikon 50 1.4 now.

Thanks for the replies, looks like I'll be pointing him in the direction of a Sigma 30mm then.

Will try to find a local shop with one in initially so he can try it out
