28-80 mm lens?

I got this photography book off the Mrs for xmas, and its a really good book, it tells you the equipment used etc and how they did the image, now on a lot of images the lens Nikon 28-80mm keeps coming up.

I have looked for the lens and I can get it for £50, but I want to know why its so cheap?

Can anyone help me with this please?

If I remember this lens has been around since the late 90's and is available both as a "D" and "G" variant ....crappy plastic mount just exudes cheap cheap cheap...
You gets what you pay for I think!!

When I bought my D200 body, I saved money by using this lens from my old Nikon film camera (entry level). This lens will disappoint ! Don't waste your money, even £50

There is a review of it here http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/2880.htm but the main thing to consider is that it is not really the "right" zoom range for a DX camera as it will not really have a "wide" end.
