2nd Body 40D or 500D?

Good evening all.

I'm really considering a cheap second body, probably no more than £350.

I am very happy with the 500D as it covers everything I need. Of course I would love to grab a 7D for the technical advance or 5DII for the full frame benefits but cash isn't there for them at the moment and I would rather lay that 'extra' spend on lenses and or flashes.

So that budget falls into the 500D or 40D price bracket.

I guess I would like another body primarily for two reasons; a backup and to keep lens changing to a minimum. Do you/have you had a second body - whats your opinion on a second body? This is not for commerical reasons (weddings for example) just more convenience.

So what body would you go for? Video is not an issue and neither is weight or size (current 500D is gripped). I guess ISO performance would have the greatest leverage it is favour.

I would go for the 40d I have the 50d and its far better than the 450d/500d series

Depends what sort of conditions you shoot in - the 500D has higher ISO options which are actually very good. The 40D is far more robust, but will be much heavier if you are carrying two cameras around...

40D all the way mate. Solid, Rugged and Reliable.

Mine will be up for sale soon as I'm joining the 7D bandwagon

I'm kinda in the same boat, need a backup and was looking at a 450d or a 40d myself.

Probably go for a 40d just to get a little better feel in hand (personal preference) and higher FPS, however the 450d is lighter and more compact.
