With a bit more paid work coming my way this year, I figured the sensible thing to do would be get a 2nd/back-up body.

Very happy with my 40D, but sadly I can't afford another one at the moment!

So with a budget of around £200-£250, should I go for a 400D, 30D maybe at a very long stretch a 450D (if I'm very lucky!)?

I love the feel, layout and solid build of the XXD cameras, but I also like the extra MP's on the 400D and 450D. Most of the time it will sit in my bag, it's purely for that "oh b****r" moment if my 40D dies on a job!

Any thoughts at all will be greatly appreciated!

So you're about £150 short of another 40D at the moment Damien...

Presumably your budget is what you currently have saved up, so how long would it take to get the extra £150?

Just thinking the build quality of the 40D and the sensor might make it worth waiting a little longer and take up Dunc's nice offer of a back up in the meantime...

Get whatever is closest to your main body. :)

That's what I'm thinking, the 30D. But 8mp doesn't seem enough as I often crop images. Those extra MP's could come in very handy!

You can always borrow my 40D if you are stuck!! I only use it for sport now....

Cheers,

Dunc

Very king of you Dunc, and very tempting, but I think I'd rather have something of my own. Although if you want rid of it for £250.....!! :naughty:

Ultimately (some time this year anyway!) I'd like to end up with a 40D and 50D, so my thinking is, I'll buy whatever I can afford now (second hand obviously) and every time I save up £200 ish, I'll sell it and upgrade. Two upgrades time, I'll have a 50D and my original 40D....

Does that sound like a decent plan or am I being :cuckoo:

If you get a 30D, you'll find the operation of the 6 functions that are accessed by pressing top plate button and adjusting with rear wheel or thumb dial are reversed to the 40D/50D, which means you either get settings muddled up or in a confusion.

When I upgraded my 30D to a 40D I contemplated keeping the 30D as a backup until I encountered this difference, and in the end I sold the 30D.

if its to sit there just in case its needed then get whatevers nearest yours.. However if its to be used on jobs with the other then I would suggest you get same model..

I ahve been on two cameras for a long time.. everytime i upgrade one i end up swapping lenses rather than using the second one because it simply isnt as good as the new..

So if you buy a camera not as good as the one you use... it will gather dust..

Get something small and light that you can take with you when you do not want to carry the 40D or you will not really use it except if the 40D breaks down.

1000D, 400D or similar would be my suggestion.
Any of the 2 along with a nifty 50 can make a small and light combo for casual use and still be ok for a couple of weeks of mail usage if the 40D needs to be repaired.

Just my humble opinion

I would pick a 30D, very close to the 40D and only 2mp off.

Sounds like a plan Damien. I 'spose the camera bodies you get in the meantime won't lose too much value so you can easily upgrade..if it were me though, I'd have the same concerns about the layout though of two different bodies..

Add £30 to your budget and buy my 450d. Great camera and would be perfect for your back up although it would be a shame to see it lying in a bag not being used.

20D/30D - ideal companions (I guess - never had a 20D)
40D/50D - ideal companions
50D/7D - so far so good.

30D/40D - button confusion led to missed shots or screwed up shots due to adjusting settings the wrong way on the wrong camera.

Some wise words here. I run a 40D as main 400D as second. Never use the 400D, but it is there if I need it.

I would suggest you either get the exact same camera, or one that is so different that you instanlty recognise that you need to work it differently when you pick it up.

But Kipax has hit the nail on the head. I would love to upgrade the 400D to another 40D for that very reason.
