2nd body recommendations: d2x or d300

Looking at picking up a 2nd hand 2nd body for football photography. Was looking at either a d2x or d300. I'd be using a 70-200 2.8 lens. Anyone got any recommendations?

well if football was played in the summer i would suggest the D2x as it has good AF & a blazing framerate (even faster in HSC mode)
BUT it has a very limited dynamic range & the image degrades rapidly above iso 800.
i've not used a D300 but from my understanding it performs better at higher iso's which may or may not be a dealbreaker?
the D2x has very good weathersealing & can be used in all conditions plus the battery life can only be described as outsanding plus the full sized Pro bodys handle superbly.
much better than the smaller bodys with a grip IMHO. they just feel kinda wrong....
i guess the main factor will be what kinda light you'll be shooting it in for the most part, if that is mainly poor/dim then you need to go with the body that works best at the higher sensitivities :)

Never used I D2x TBH but I used a D300 with a Sigma 70-200 all last season for a under 16s rugby league teams. With a grip you get 8fps and the battery life is very good. Nikon describe it as 'Weather resistant' and I have used it in all weathers with an optech cover. I found that as long as the light was reasonable it handled high ISO's pretty well, (forget about night games I tried it under floodlights and the results were crap!) Hope this helps you at least a little.
 
Used both camera's over time and still own the D300, The D300 is a far better camera and autofocusing is alot better on it also, Along with you can push the ISO more than the D2x...
 
Actually D300 is faster at 6fps in 12mp mode (where as the D2x is "only" 5 FPS). The D300s is even faster @ 7fps. Both D300 and D300s can go to 8FPS with the grip and correct batteries, whereas the D2x is still only 5fps. It can go faster in crop mode up to 8fps) but only at around 7mp resolution.

D300 also has built in flash, commander mode and a MUCH better LCD screen to boot to name but a few. The only area where the D2x might best the D300 is at native ISO which is ISO100 vs the D300's ISO200.
 
I've used the D300 for various indoor sports and it performed well, nice quick AF etc, no problem recommending it.
 
Although I'm only looking to use it as a remote I did the research and went for the D300 above the D2x - mainly for the high ISO performance.
