So, talking hypothetically, which of the above 2 would you choose? Does anyone have piccies with the first combination?

I would go (and I did!) with the 300mm + 1.4x for the IS and ability to use it as a 300mm f4 lens.

I have some samples somewhere but these are on the computer at home (on holiday at the moment)

The 400/5.6 will give sharper images but you'll need decent light to benefit from it. The 300/4 + 1.4x works well on duller days when the IS can be a benefit.....I used to say that 300/4 combination gets the most use but the 400/5.6 is the lens with the sun tan.

Shots in this thread were taken with the 300/4 + 1.4x (on a 30D)

Interesting question as I am looking for a long lens, presently use my 70-200/2.8 with a 2X get good results but wonder if the 400/5.6 prime would be better

Thanks all. Those shots from bob are what I wanted to see! I have a 70-200 f4 on the way along with a 1.4 TC and am performing some long term planning with regards to my next lens. Looks like a 300 f4! Does the IS work with a TC on it still?

I was looking in to the same thing as I am sick of taking half a ton of kit on long flights, After reading the reviews the 400 is sharper than the 300 with and without the converter on the 300,most of the time on holiday I have the 1.4 on my 300f2.8L anyway so when a used 400f5.6 popped up in the classifieds at a nice price I had to have it and it is superb.

From what I've seen of the 400 5.6 it suffers from being very contrasty. The 300 f4 gives a much more pleasing image, even with the 1.4x TC.

Not for me, I have found the 400 f5.6 to be far better than my old 300 in focusing, sharpness e.t.c

Mine also has a nice suntan :D

On the lookout for good priced 400 5.6 myself. Been weighing up between that and the 100-400 recently but i finally decided on the prime. I never even considered the 300, just because i do not really want to be using coverters that could degrade the image.

At one point i had 70-200, 300mmf4 and 400mmf5.6, along with the 1.4tc, i sold the 300mmf4 as it wasnt getting any use the 300mm isnt as sharp with the tc fitted as the 400.
