Hello, after looking at the many 300's for canon and not getting anywhere I thought it'd see what everyone here thinks. What are people's thoughts on the -
Canon 300 2.8 mk 1
Sigma 120-300 2.8
Sigma 300 2.8
Tokina 300 2.8
I'd prefer not to spend over £1500, used isn't a problem. Is it possible to get good AF/IQ at that price?

Chris

You can get the Canon 300 2.8 mk 1 for about £1000. Bear in mind that it is not serviced by Canon anymore.

I think Demilion has had good results with Sigma 120-300 and at WEX it's £1689

Theres a new version of the 120-300mm OS due out in the new year, there were a couple of issues with the first version.

The Canon 300/2.8 is a superb lens, but an IS version will set you back anything from £2500 upwards.
I've had a play with a Sigma 120-300 and it's a heavy bugger, but it seemed a little sharper than the Sigma 300/2.8 I tried alongside it.

If you're looking at mainly sports photography, then the 120-300 may give the best all round service with the nice sharpness, reasonably cost and versatility of the zoom.

Just my 10p worth. (y)

I'm surprised that the 120-300 is sharper than the sigma 300 2.8. Does anyone have real world experience of them both?

When I was in the same boat as you earlier in the year, I had heard from a few people that the Sigma 120-300 was sharper than the Sigma 300 for some reason, so I went to my local store to try them both side by side. I found the 120-300 slightly sharper, but quite a bit heavier. They're both well made and I would have gone for the 120-300 if someone hadn't given me a go with their Canon 300/2.8! :bonk::D
I just had to save for that one then, which I did.(y)

I've had both and didn't find a huge difference in them. Prefer the flexibility of the zoom but it's a good bit heavier. Still have the 120-300 and will see what the latest version is like when it's released and maybe trade in against it.

Keep saving up for a 300 2.8L IS. Must be one of the best lenses in the world.(y)

The Sigma 120-300 is a nice piece of glass, i used the older one with a MKIIN when i shot Canon, it suffers focus breathing and is closer to 270mm than 300mm, the Sigma 300mm prime is poor in comparisson, there are too many bad copies kicking about to consider buying it used.

wouldnt consider the canon or tokina

My 300 2.8 L IS would have to be prised from my cold, dead hands it's absolutely superb.

Do what you can to stretch to the best Canon 300 2.8 that you can afford. You don't need IS for sports.
But you do need to be confident when spending a large wad of cash that if something goes wrong you can get it fixed which isnt the case with the MKI Canon non IS, it will just become an expensive door stop.

Canon EF 300mm f2.8L IS all the way, i have this lens since 2006 or 2007 i can't remember and it is proving itself until now, and pairing it now with my latest camera 1DX i can tell this lens is a mind blowing!

I was thinking to get Sigma 120-300 because i struggle with fixed lens, and my 70-200 is fine but it is only for closer actions and then i have to crop all other shots more than 80% which will kill the IQ, so i was thinking that 120-300 may help me in that arsenal.
