30D Flash Help!

Hi, It was my second time today using my 30D and I took about 500 shots today, I noticed when I used the flash it flickered several times similar to that when you put two electrical wires together, then the larger flash flashes.
I was wondering is this normal? because my friends their cameras just flash straight away.

If it was at the end of the 'shoot' and the light was getting bad it may have been the AF focus assist firing to allow the lens to focus on the subject. I wouldnt be concerned about the other flashguns, there are too many variables to count what they were doing. Assuming it still managed to correctly focus and expose the shots I'd ignore it, or try it out again when its really dark and see if it does the same again.

sounds like the assist kicking in as matt says. it will do this so the camera can focus, then the last flash will be the actual shot.

nah dont worry :) its all good. when smoke comes out of it, then you worry :)
