30mm sony,any good for portraits ?

my wife likes to take portraits and is finding a kit lens abit soft.
id like to try some macro so the 30mm would be more up my street.
id like to buy 1 lens for both if it would work so whats why i`m asking for advise.

It's a cracking potrait lens m8 and not bad as a limited macro lens as well.These pics of my daughter where taken with this lens.

What on earth have you done to that poor child's eyes? You have made them look like an "alien".

Andy I ain't done much on her eyes.Messed with sharpness and little colour on the second pic but she has had very striking eyes since she was born and often people remark on them.So not sure if I should be insulted or think that maybe you should get your eyes tested?

Dean, many apologies, I was out of order with my comments. Its just that a lot of local togs whose work I have seen lately, seem to overdo the eye sharpness and colour, particularly on blue eyes.

No problem Andy..apology accepted. I know the second pic does look like a lot has been done on her eyes but the shot was out of focus so had to sharpen a little and maybe with messing the colour has made them look a little to blue?Anyways I will start to worry when she starts glowing like something out of Cacoon.

i would say that a 50mm macro lens..something like this..

may be your best option IF you intend to dabble into macro work.the reason i say this is that 50mm seems to be a good focal length for portrait shots,and it will afford you a better working distance for any macro work which involves insects etc..which can be scared if you get too close to them[shooting @ 1:1].the sony 50mm F1.8 wouldn't really be suitable for macro,unless you use extension tubes,close up filters etc..but a great portrait/low light lens.
