Simple question.

Was playing with my new 350D last night, on Tv mode, I was playing with the shutter speed and couldn't get it to go faster than 1/200...

I'm aware there were some underexposure issues but wanted to play around, am I doing something wrong?!

Ta muchly.

Did you have your flash popped up? That might cause the camera to limit the shutter speed.

I did...

So on these 'creative' modes, if the flash is up it will use it and if down it wont? That was long winded. i.e.

How do you tell the camera to use flash or not?

Many thanks all, I havent got to Chapter 7 (Flash) of the instructions yet which has this:

In the Tv and M modes, even if you set the shutter speed to one faster
than 1/200 sec., it will be set automatically to 1/200 sec.

Many thanks Jon, Gordon and Pants! More experimenting tonight!

In addition
In Av mode on the 400 and the 50 there is a custom function which you can set that changes the shutter speed if you pop the flash, it can be set to
1) auto (which can be very slow)
2) something between 1/60 and 1/200
3) or fixed at 1/200.
There's probably something similar on the 350 also.

I set both of mine to a fixed shutter speed in Av when flash turned on so I know if I pop the flash it wont set a really slow shutter speed and give me a double image (ambient and flash captures).
Double image or blur is fine if you want it but I prefer to do that when I want it rather than by default which you can get in 1) above

The reason it does this is because you cannot use nomral flash on any camera with a focal-plane type shutter (all DSLRs) at higher speeds. It varies slightly, but around 1/200sec is typical. If you google focal-plane shutter, you'll see how it works and why this is so.

You can overcome it with a separate flash gun that has High Speed Sync, and this works pretty well, although there are then some other things to consider with that. Again, an understanding of how the shutter works will make it clear.
