35L or a set of primes ...

Currently pondering over my next lens purchase. I've been saving up for a while and had initially decided that I wanted to purchase a Canon 35L or the new Sigma equivalent. Currently in my kit bag I have a 24-105mm f/4 and a 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 along with my Canon 7D. I wanted a fast piece of glass to use during the darker hours and I also know that the 35mm lenses are famously sharp, which I'm a big advocate of!

However, I've been reading today that 35mm lenses can cause some distortion. My intention was to use the 35mm like a 50mm on the 1.6x crop-factor. I had a 50mm but found that the reach was just a little too far with the crop-factor. Using a 35mm with a crop essentially gives me the focal length of 56mm, which seems a generally decent length.

On the flip side of things, if I were to not go with the 35mm option, I could probably pick up two maybe three primes for the same price...

Has anyone experienced distortion with the 35mm? I'd be grateful to see some examples.

I mostly photograph portraits and general candid photography. Partial to a bit of landscapes, but I have the 10-22 for that!

I think what people may be talking about is perspective distortion caused by reducing the camera to subject distance to fill the frame (with a full frame camera?) If you're using the lens on a 7D what you'll get is an effective FoV about the same as a 50mm lens on full frame and as long as you don't stick it in someones face IMVHO distortion (perspective distortion, if that's what we're talking about) just wont be anything to worry about.
