right im thinking of getting either the 35mm or 50mm Nikon lens it will be for my D60 and just want to no which one is the best picture quality/sharpness the 35mm is a fair bit cheap than the 50mm so is the 35 not as good ?????
 
what focal range will it give on a d60?
 
The 50mm lens is very good but you may find it too long, depending what you're going to use it for.

The 35mm lens is very highly rated and is fantastic value for money, to be honest I doubt whether you would see much difference in every day use in terms of image quality. The 50mm is great for narrow DOF but the 35mm is also pretty fast (especially compared to a standard kit lens) and should allow you to experiment with some nice out of focus backgrounds. I think you'd find it much better as a general use walkaround lens.
 
The 35mm gives you the normal equivalent of the 50mm on a full frame. I really liked the 50mm on my D200 though so it might be worth trying this. The AFS 50mm f/1.4 is very sharp. I'll dig out an image shortly but I do like to 50mm. What is it mainly for?

I have the 35mm and have also used my brothers 50mm. I can't tell the difference. (but I'm no pro!)

The 50mm is just a little too close for an every day lens IMHO. I cant fault the 35mm, sharp and lets in loooooaaaads of light :-)

Ok, checked the EXIF on this one and it was taken with the AFS 50mm f/1.4 DOH......

dpreview.com did a very decent review of this. Can't remember the full detail but I think the view was that it represented ridiculously good value for money with excellent performance
 
i bought the 35mm 1.8 on friday, but havent really used it in anger yet.

here's a few shots playing around with Dof.

i have the 50mm 1.8 but i really didnt get on with it at all due to the distance from the subject. i just didnt find it practical. maybe i didnt give it enough time, but straight from the box the 35mm feels much more natural as far as subject distance goes and far more versatile. below is a few playing around shots. all f1.8 except 4 which is f10

I have a 35mm f2 and 50mm f1.8, the 35mm gets lots more use on my D300 than the 50mm.

35mm has a a nice close focus distance around 200-300mm, which lends itself to some interesting shot possibilities.

If I lost all my kit I would get another 35mm, I would not bother replacing the 50mm.

One question mark is sufficient to indicate a question my friend.

Why are you obsessing over sharpness? As primes, they will both be sharp enough for your camera.

The main difference here is focal length, 35mm for normal, making for a more versatile lens. 50mm for portraits and street photography.

Ask yourself what it is that you want to do with the new lens. Put fitness for purpose before sharpness.

Given the choice on your crop sensor I would go with the 35mm option every time.
 
I have both. 35mm in my opinion is the perfect compact companion for my D40. I have noticed a bit more fringing on the 35mm wide open when compared to the 50mm. :D

Edit: I'm comparing the 35mm 1.8 to the 50mm 1.8 not the 1.4 that the OP was asking about. D'oh!
 
In 50mm, the ƒ/1.4 AF-S and the Sigma have nine rounded aperture blades, for better bokeh when stopped down a bit.

I have the 50mm f1.4 d

if you pop over to the landscapes picture forum (lower down on the main lists) you can see my (feeble) attempt at using it.

There are some other pics on the flickr link.

Only thing is I think cowasaki has the 1.4g af-s and it may be slightly nicer on the bokeh. Price for the 1.4d is about 200 plus pnp. I think the afs version is around 300?

Have you looked at the sigma 30mm f1.4 too?
 
what's the price on each?
