35mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.8?

Horses for courses, but the 50mm wins for me. I have both, but while the 50mm is sometimes a bit tight, the 35 never seems to be the right length. It's never wide enough nor is it ever long enough. 1.8 isn't really a requirement for landscapes anyway. Have you considered a 2.8 normal zoom, I have a Sigma 18-50 2.8, which was less than your budget, and its flexibility means it spends way more time on the camera than either of the primes.
 
The 35mm F1.8 nikon lens is a dx lens James. That means that its not really a wide angle lens as such on a dx camera, its got a field of view equivalent to a traditional 50mm lens on a full frame dslr or 35mm film camera. A 50mm lens on a dx camera becomes a short telephoto, great for portraits but maybe not as useful as a landscape lens. What camera are you going to use it on?
 
James I haven't been following your life - are you on crop or full frame? And what's your main current subject interest if indeed you have one? The best intro is having a kit zoom and noting which of its focal lengths you tend to favour. Then get a prime that tallies with that observation. There's no obligatory focal length for 'landscapes'. Ideally it's not about aesthetics but about emotional engagement. Focal lengths are personal and we're all different.
