35mm Films I should try

Kodak Portra - The new 400 and 160 versions are amongst the best film products released in many years and are extremely fine grained, and not too contrasty or saturated, their designed for portraiture but I've used them for many other applications and they work well.

You might also like to try Kodak E-100G or Fuji Provia 100F/400X as their fine grained, neutral slide films. Despite being fairly saturated, Kodak E-100VS is another film that is fine with skin tones and has a nice bright look to it.

As above Portra in either speed, best C-41 I've ever used (apart from Super G 800)

I liked the roll of Portra I shot, it's difficult to describe accurately but it just had a very nice 'feel' to it. I assume you mean colour only (from the Velvia comment)?
