35mm Negative scanner? (Ordering tonight)

My Dad is wanting to convert his 35mm negatives to a digital format. The negatives are between 2 and 30 years old so the scanner has to be up to the job of converting these in reasonable quality. I have offered to go over them in Photoshop if it is needed (especially the ones he plans to use for my sisters Wedding).

He has come to me with the HP Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner which suggests budget is up to £200. But for this money there must be good dedicated units about? Perhaps something that will help automate the process? (Is there one which works like a fax, put several negs in the top, scanned and ejected out of the bottom?)

Any opinions greatly welcome. As said in the title he wants to order tonight. :)

Thanks.

I have a Canon scanner that allows the scanning of negatives or slides but it is a long process. Put one negative strip in.... scan... save... remove negative strip.... repeat until extremely bored..!!!

The results are pretty good. I was asked to scan over 2000 slides for someone. It only allows 4 slides at once. Therefore 500+ scans and saves. Each scan took approx 4-5mins. Yawn..yawn

There are dedictaed quicker units out there but Im sure they are £500 - £600. But I could be wrong??

Hope you get it sorted..!!!!!!!

Generally recommended flatbed film scanners for about £150: Epson 4490 and Canon 8800F

I have the Canon and it works a treat for scanning 35mm and 120 film.

If it's just a once off job for a batch of film, I'd probably rather get a pro scanning shop to handle the lot. They use dedicated film scanners which will be way out of your price range (£500 - £1000+), but are the best of the best - ie. Nikon Coolscan series.

EDIT: Oh, and check out this thread.
