Hi everyone i need some advice.

Probably going to get either a 35mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.8 lens at the focus on imaging show but was wondering which focal length is more useful?

im getting either of these lens's because i like the large aperture they offer and i think i can learn more from a fixed focal lens.

My question is which is more likely to be more usable for things such as portraits, still life, etc?

Thanks for any advice

I have a Canon 450d,I have a 60mm f2.8 and a 30mm f1.4,I find the 30mm more useful indoors and for landscapes. The 60mm I find is too long for indoor use and not wide enough for landscape. The 30mm is a sigma and at f1.4 the depth of field is like a razor I love it!!

35mm? That way you can use it on both your D40 and D90, the 50mm doesn't have the focus motor

the 50mm for arranged shots would be ideal, as the focal length is better suited to portraits, but if you want to go walkabout the 35mm is a much easier focal length to work with.

Bear in mind that the 50 won't autofocus on your D40 whereas the 35 will. I use my Sigma 30mm a lot more than I do the 50, which I find quite restrictive, so I'd say the 35.
