Good afternoon all,

I am working on a shoot with a bit of a twist. The company would like a 360 degree photograph of the object in question and the ability of a user to interactively drag around it. Ultimately the result will be used online.

Does anybody know of a piece of software / javascript with which I can make this happen? There will be in excess of 32 images to use.

I have been looking into Quicktime VR but I am failing to understand how it works and what software I will need for this to apply itself.

Your help is much appreciated.

Dan.

Do you require the 360 looking from the inside out or the outside in?

If that makes sense.

Google....HUGIN panorama stich. is what you need, I think!

Yeah, spent a few hours trying to find something. 250 quid is a little too exspensive.

I have the Adobe Master Collection and use Premier quite a bit for my animation work. I was wondering if Quicktime VR works for pivot rotation so you can rotate around the object.

My concern is that the majority of applications provide for "inside" rotation. I am looking for a rotation based on a pivot point, being the centre of the object.

Hi,

I can second 'VRWorx' which is a pretty useful program for creating what you mentioned - it's still essentially a quicktime VR. I assume from your description (object) you want to take pictures of an object (mobile phone / widget . car etc) and move around it.

(Apologies if you already know the following, but you did mention you were struggling to understand a QTVR)

The simplest way I can explain what a QTVR is and how to create them is get you to picture a piece of corn on the cob in front of you on a plate as if you were about to eat it. You take a picture of you're corn at equal angles around the object, and then using the software you feed these images in, and it will create a movie for you. Although the movie is not a linear (time based) movie that you will be used to, you step through the 'frames' using your mouse. The software works out the direction you move the mouse (up / down / left / right) and will change to the appropriate frame in the non-linear movie, as if you are spinning the object in space.

Imagine the corn on the cob on a plate. Rotate the plate 360 degrees on the table and take a picture every 30 degrees not moving the camera (12 images not repeating the first). Now rotate the corn on the cob about it's own cylindrical axis (as if on a skewer), and then rotate the plate on the table 360 degrees again taking a further 12 images. Rotate the corn another 30 dgrees on it's own axis, then rotate the plate and take a further 12 images. Continue till you've covered all angles. If i remember the maths correctly, you'll end up with 84 images in this example (12 * (6+1))

These are then loaded into VR worx, simply change the relevant settings and it will create a navigatable movie for you. Fairly simple.

We used to use the software for compiling quicktime VR's (but we use computer generated images of products rather than photos) to send to clients so they can 'spin' around new products. We'd take 684 individual shots, which is an image every 10 degrees all the way round the product so the end result is pretty smooth. But now we custom build presentations which have added interactivity using Flash.

I would try a test before you do you're shoot which will help you figure out how to set the shoot up first.

Hope this helps,

Mark.

Also this is a fairly good link, if very old. The principles haven't changed but explain QTVR objects well.

A small bit of further info VRWorx creates a object based QTVR by feeding in individual images. Years ago, when I was on a Mac, I used to create a linear movie from all my individual CG shots then use an app on the Mac which would add navigable data directly to the quicktime movie. It was completely free but unfortunately only worked on Mac's pre OS X - cant remember the name, but if you need me to fire up my old mac let me know. It was one of the reasons I kept my old mac alive.....

Thats a pretty fine explaination. Thanks very much!

So, Quicktime hasn't got an authoring application built into it? If I need to create a QTVR Object file I will need third party authoring software to feed QTVR the right information, kind of like exporting a movie file to DivX.

So really, there would be no point in purchasing QTPro as I would need to further purchase VR Worx or something similar to actually make the object file.

Righty,...

PM'ed you.

Keep in mind that QTVR will need the user to download the QT plug in - something that some (many?) will not do. I am sure you can find one that will produce in Flash (which is more widespread plugin)

I have just found this - http://www.yofla.com/flash/3d-rotate/ which is much lower pricing

I've used the Google phrases "Product VR Flash" and "Product 360 Flash" and there are some others

Thank you very much for your help, this seems to be exactly what I am looking for, not that the QTVR and VR Worx wasn't. This is affordable and a cost which is managable within the invoice.

Much appreciated.

Thanks to everyone for your kind assistance. I will upload and share the results in due course.
