3D tracking

Hi,
I recently took some photos of my eldest's ice hockey game, using centre point focus, and got a surprising number of keepers (fo my level of ability...). Is the 3D focus tracking mode of the Nikon D7200 good enough to use for such photography?? It would help for sure when a player has the puck and be able to follow him during play.
Thanks.
(was using an 85mm 1.5 nikon lens)

probably depends a lot on the contrast between subject and background, ive used it on a D500 for football and its been 50/50, i generally find single or group the best.

In your situation, i assume the background is almost white and the player decently coloured? if so 3d may work quite well if has the stark contrast to lock onto.

others may know better.
