3G Broadband Dongle - quick review.

Having been royally screwed around by Virgin and account suspended (and then suddenly re-instated with all charges cancelled) I borrowed a 3G broadband dongle from a nephew.

Had to top-up £10.00 for 1Gb for a month (£15.00 for 3Gb) - the only thing is you have to use it within one month or lose it.

Must admit it worked quite well - just plug in and wait while it went through the installation process.

Did a speed check and results:

D/L 1.8Mb/sec and U/L about 3-4 KB/sec.

Not superfast but quite acceptable but had an odd glitch - at times it would hang before site had fully downloaded leaving just a white page but clicking "disconnect" would reveal part of the page then clicking "connect" and it would carry on from where it left off - rally weird but could work round it.

The strength where I am is quite good (about 5 bars out of 8) but I do live upstairs in a flat so obviously signal strength would vary.

Connecting to a longer USB cable only diminished the signal strength.

Overall it was quite good and you can also put in a micro SD card to convert to a modem + USB flash card.

Could certainly be handy for anyone on the move providing you can get a good signal.

Thats a pretty top tip actually! Thanks, definite food for thought for me!

Pete
