I’ve been using my 3rd-party grip (Neewar possibly?) for a while and have had no issues with it in terms of performance; some reviews have it draining batteries, turning off etc. never happened to me though.
Last week however, I noticed whilst out on a walk it was flexing away from the body with each step I took. When I got to a café, I removed it to check the attachment and 4 of the micro-screws that held the plate on fell out. I managed not to lose any, and tried to re-screw them in – first with a penknife blade, later (at home) with a proper screwdriver but it seems the thread’s been stripped.
I also almost always carry my camera on a RapidStrap Sport (RS-7) which is attached via the tripod screw-thread, so in this setup, the weight of the camera & lens (7D + 24-105 probably the heaviest setup), is only going into the grip, which in turn is attached via the main body tripod screw. I’m guessing the repeated stressing of the grip has pulled the screws out. (Exactly as in the shot HERE)
My question is whether this is an issue with cheaper grips, or if I’ll suffer the same problem with a Canon grip? The attachment method is the same, and it will still have the same weight-going-through-the-grip issue. The previous day we got caught in a classic British summer rain storm (hard and heavy!), and I left the camera out in the elements – no harm done, but I’m now counting myself lucky for not shorting out the camera. If it’s a generic issue, I’ll just get another Neewar one as three of them are still cheaper than the Canon one, but the Canon one is still cheaper than a new camera!
Does anyone use a similar setup (RapidStrap + Battery Grip) and able to advise?
If/when I get a heavier lens (only likely to be a long lens), the strap will attach to the lens, not the body, so the current setup is probably the limit in terms of weight.
