3rd party flash

all flashes can achieve similar results... it just depends on there location and direction etc...

if your after ettl and the like your more than likely need a 'better' one, but i've always got away without using ettl- ive got some remote receiver triggers that means i can locate my flash seperate to the body and still get decent results without ultra expense
 
I have a couple of Nissin Di622 flashes which I use both on and off camera. I can thoroughly recommend them, but would advocate getting the Mk2 version as it is more versatile. The Nissins get used just as much as the SB600s I also have.
 
I'd second the Nissin - I've a couple of Di866 II's very good, in fact way beyond my skill level.
