Just wondering if anyone has tried the 400/5.6 + 1.4x tc on a 5D3, I am interested in the AF speed - what is it like (I know its centre point only), is it fast enough for BIF?
Only interested in folks that have actually tried this combo thanks as I have years of experience with the lens on crop bodies. Thanks for any feedback.

Unless something has changed in the Mk3, the AF speed will be zero.
The AF system only works with F5.6 and below. The combo you are suggesting is above that.
You are obviously way out of date - the 5D3 will AF up to f8 (centre point as per the 1 series) since a firmware release about a year ago!!

i used it at waddo last yr , was pretty decent at tracking planes ,will put a few shots up later

what ive found out since magic lantern had dot tune built into it was that i needed to adjust it to -9 !

I've tried that combo albeit with a Mk3 1.4. On bright days it's quite good enough. On dull days it can be a bit on the sluggish side but then BIF on dull days don't do a lot for me anyway!!!
As above^^^the latest firmware allows AF at f8.
(It even focusses on dust bunnies!!!)

Yes that dust bunnie ! i cleaned the sensor before i left, was spotless, 5 mins on the airfield , without changing lenses, and it was there!! windy airfields!!!

Nice to know, thanks to the OP for this question - just wondering which TCs should we be looking at?

Nice helpful shots Balb0wa - BTW was that all you needed for DotTune? Plus what range did you use it at - I thought it had to be miles away!

The biggest problem I find is keeping the subject in the frame at 560mm. OK with big planes but bif, best of luck other than that its a fine combo with little image degradation.

i just downloaded the latest magic lantern for dot tune, you go to a menu, select dot dune, restart and its there. i did the test at 5 metres, seemed to work ok at various distances, the focus seems spot on.

its not that bad, the 4 outer points work as assist points i think, i went to the farnes in June, i left the 400mm and 300mm in the guest house, i took a 1d3 ,5d3 and a 70-300L and a 70-200mk2 , id read on here a 70-200 would be perfect and anything else over kill, last time i listen to folk on here :-)

lol, looks like you have a big kitchen :D

I'm on the latest - thanks for the info though, I'll try that in the garden.

Mind me asking about which teleconvertor? I see the prices vary a fair bit but in honesty don't know which would be the best one to go with.

kitchen is quite long, i was in the hall as well , its the canon 1.4x mk2 , think they go for £160 ish second hand on here.

Cheers :D

I almost put an offer on one last night but wasn't sure if you had the II or III (not that it seems theres much between them on the 1.4) based pretty much on your images!

Obviously good enough for slow birds, but did you find the AF took a serious hit?

EDIT: I had put the II or II - d'oh there wouldn't have been much between them!
