400 or 500mm

Hi I am plasm ing to do some air shows this year and currently using sigma 70-200mm f2.8 with sigma tele con venter 2x. Is is worth upgrading to the bigger sigma 500mm zoom.
 
You can get very near the action in airshows. Your 70-200mm may be adequate on it's own, but you can always add the TC if needed.
500mm is a bit of a brute to handle trying to capture flying aircraft.
 
I know someone who uses the siggy 70-200 with a 2x and the quality is disappointing below f/8, where it is acceptable but still lacking compared to the sigma tele-zooms.

But then, a 2x is a lot cheaper than a 150-500 or 120-400.

The question is, how many air shows do you plan on doing? If you're only doing 1 or 2 I wouldn't buy a lens just for that, either make do with the 2x or rent a lens like the 50-500 OS or 100-400L (depending on what brand you shoot with) or the sigma 120-300 f/2.8.

But if you're gonna do a lot of them, I would be leaning towards a 150-500 or 50-500.

But there is a good chance the camera would turn off AF when it detected the convertor. Even if it didn't the autofocus would be abysmal as the lens would have a max aperture in excess of F11 @ 500mm (Probably F14)

It will fit, I believe Artyman has some examples he's managed to get with this combination, but image quality will take a hit and it'll be no AF and the aperture becomes dismally slow. I certainly wouldn't think it would be any use for air-shows.
