I have a 400D and its not even 2 years old but yesterday it came up with an error99 and looking into it it is the shutter not opening.

Have been told it will be about 140-160 for service and repair (plus the cost of me sending it) but as these go for £230 with a 6 month warrantee it is worth fixing!!

I am a little upset as I thought it would last a bit longer that it has!!

Anyone know of anywhere I can take it near Guildford in Surrey or Slough in Berkshire?

Try getting a pencil with a rubber on the end.

Gently give the contacts on the lens and camera mount a rub clean with the rubber.

BE VERY CAREFUL, do not press too hard and don't get any rubber flecks in the camera.

This should clear any grease from the contacts, which will hopefully restore connection between the camera and lens.

Error 99 is an unknown error, and will result in the shutter not opening. So for someone to quote you for a fix is complete rubbish.

and make sure the battery is fully charged

was using a fully charged batery, have also done the rubber trick!

the reason for thinking its the shutter is that if you do a manual sensor clean then the shutter does not open and also the camera does not shut off when you switch it off.

From what you have said, it seems that the error is still showing even if the lens is not attached.
Can you try it with the card out as well.

Well its been off to Fixation and it was the shutter that went. I am a little miffed as I have estimated the shutter count to be about 15000 and that is well short of what it should do.

If it breaks again I will look at a 50D or simular but for the moment the repair bill is still much lower than a new camera!!!!

Big up to Fixation http://fixationuk.com for a really speedy repair :)
