Yes
I have been trying to update the firmware on my camera with no success.

I have downloaded the file and then go and click on the file to unzip it but it will not unzip.
Please point me in the right direction as i'm losing my patients now.

TIA

Sounds like a computer issue rather than a camera problem?

I'll get the obvious out of the way first... do you have WinZip or something similar installed? otherwise you won't be able to open zip files.
Also, check what permissions you have set - if you're running Vista it sometimes blocks me from opening compressed files.

If it's XP and up, right click, and 'extract all' should do the trick...

If it's a Mac, double clicking should do the trick....

Unless, you haven't got all the downloaded file ie it's corrupted somehow.

Tell us more of what's gone on so far please :)

From what I see on the canon website the file should be a self-extracting archive. Can you give details of the error message? Maybe the download has been corrupted for some reason.

I have free version of winzip and if i try to unzip the file it says it isn't a zip file.

It does so file could be corrupted but i have even downloaded it again.

I'm using Vista.

Am i right in thinking the file will be in a zip format when its copied over to the CF card and my camera will convert the file?

levihaynes has put a link up in this thread for you click it then save to desktop, then put the file on your card put in the camera then do the update

no just put the file on a cf card then update the firmware

You DO NOT 'just put the file on a cf card' - It MUST be de-compressed first.

From the firmware update instructions:

Download the firmware update file from the Web page.
The file for updating the camera's firmware can be downloaded from the Web page. Please download the compressed, self-extracting file that matches your computer's operating system.
Extract the file downloaded from the Web and create the firmware update file. Copy the firmware update file in the first window that appears when the CF card is opened (the root directory).
The name of the firmware update file is ”e4kr3xxx.fir”. (”xxx” will be different for each firmware version.)
The name and size of the firmware update file can be checked on the Web site.

Windows
Double-click the downloaded file.
Clicking "OK" will cause the file's contents to be extracted and the firmware update file to be created. (Click "Browse" to select a destination for the extracted files. This destination may be different from the path initially displayed, "C: ".)
Confirm file size of the firmware update file. If the file size differs, please download the file again from the Web site.
You can confirm this by right-clicking the icon and selecting the Properties command from the pop-up menu that appears.

Thanks everyone.

I was worried because i didn't want to screw up the camera and thought the zip file had to be extracted.

I will try and update it now.

The file is on the CF card and properties are as follows

zip (.fir)

440 bytes (440 bytes)

but it does say 'Opens with winzip'

If i click on the file on CF then it trys to unzip it using 'Winzip'.

Is this right?

no you gotta put the file from my post above on card then put the card in the camera then in the tools on camera run the update

I have just downloaded straight to the CF card and the properties are both the same, but it does say 'Opens with Winzip' in the properties of the file.

Is this right?

I have downloaded it again after formatting CF card. The properties of the file seems fine but when i click on the card and go to the files it does show up as 'zip' file.

If this is right, its what has been confusing me.

Doesn't work!

you might need to explain that further. What doesn't work? In the camera or just what you are seeing in windows explorer? I have just downloaded levihaynes version and vista did not want to unzip or extract, it appears to be a executable .fir file, but not a canon user, so can't be more specific.

Please let me aks the obvious

1) Did you download the file (either PC or Mac) from this site http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosdigital3/e4kr3_firmware-e.html

2) Did you download it to your hard drive not direct to your CF card first???The file is a "self extractor" so if Vista is IDing it as a zip then IMO this a Vista issue ~ does Vista offer a 'rightclick' option of "run" rather than double clicking it??? The downloaded file is an .exe not a zip, if Vista is so naming it then you seem to have a "file association" problem on your PC. You will need to get help from Vista users to determine how to unassociate it ~ so to speak !

2a) As others have stated like them I can dl it to my W2K system and perform the self extraction AOK.

3) Once extracted as per the instructions on the site you copy the .fir file onto a freshly PC formated CF card and the do as the instructions say.

If you doing the above exactly as the Canon site instructions and still having issues then this is a PC issue ~ perhaps you can a friend to download to their XP PC???

I will get my mac out tomorrow and either try it with that or the copy of XP i have on it.

Cheers

It shouldn't show as a zip file once it has been extracted

Have a read of his link and maybe print it off

http://www.canon.co.jp/imaging/eosdigital3/e4kr3_firmware-e.html

Once you agree it'll take you to a page where you can download the firmware which is a self extracting file. Save to your desktop.

Once downloaded double click the zip file then run and it'll extract it also to your desktop. The file name is e4kr3111.fir and should be 4793kb in size, this is the one you will need to save to your cf card.

Here's a link to the detailed pdf instructions

http://www.canon.co.jp/imaging/dc/PDF/e4kr3firmup-e.pdf

it really isn't difficult.

Sorry to hijack the thread somewhat but is the firmware update something that needs doing to all 400D's? I have version 1.0.4 currently, should I update it?

All updated now!

Thanks to everyone for the help.

The problem was with my laptop as it wasn't extracting the file properly.Tried another computer and it worked 1st time.

Yes it is worth updating the firmware.

I found that version 1.1.1 on the 400d made noise a little less of a problem. If your camera is working fine, then I do not think it is mandatory to update, but might perhaps be beneficial.
Personally, I find updating via the EOS utility to be a little less nerve-wracking than the CF method here.

Glad you got it sorted , I hate a mystery when it comes to technology not doing "what is says on the tin".

:)
