no just put the file on a cf card then update the firmware
Download the firmware update file from the Web page.
The file for updating the camera's firmware can be downloaded from the Web page. Please download the compressed, self-extracting file that matches your computer's operating system.
Extract the file downloaded from the Web and create the firmware update file. Copy the firmware update file in the first window that appears when the CF card is opened (the root directory).
The name of the firmware update file is e4kr3xxx.fir. (xxx will be different for each firmware version.)
The name and size of the firmware update file can be checked on the Web site.
Windows
Double-click the downloaded file.
Clicking "OK" will cause the file's contents to be extracted and the firmware update file to be created. (Click "Browse" to select a destination for the extracted files. This destination may be different from the path initially displayed, "C: ".)
Confirm file size of the firmware update file. If the file size differs, please download the file again from the Web site.
You can confirm this by right-clicking the icon and selecting the Properties command from the pop-up menu that appears.
You DO NOT 'just put the file on a cf card' - It MUST be de-compressed first.
From the firmware update instructions:
-Rob

The file is on the CF card and properties are as follows
zip (.fir)
440 bytes (440 bytes)
but it does say 'Opens with winzip'
Doesn't work!
Please let me aks the obvious
1) Did you download the file (either PC or Mac) from this site http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosdigital3/e4kr3_firmware-e.html
2) Did you download it to your hard drive not direct to your CF card first???The file is a "self extractor" so if Vista is IDing it as a zip then IMO this a Vista issue ~ does Vista offer a 'rightclick' option of "run" rather than double clicking it???
2a) As others have stated like them I can dl it to my W2K system and perform the self extraction AOK.
3) Once extracted as per the instructions on the site you copy the .fir file onto a freshly PC formated CF card and the do as the instructions say.
If you doing the above exactly as the Canon site instructions and still having issues then this is a PC issue ~ perhaps you can a friend to download to their XP PC???
