I have been offered a Canon 10D (body only) in exchange for my 400D with 18-55 kit lens.

Being fairly new to photography, I don't fully understand all the specs. On the face of it, the 400D seems to be higher spec than the 10D. Is this the case?

I know the LCD screen is a lot smaller on the 10D, but I don't use it for editing anyway (eyesight not good enough).

Would a swap be a step backwards, forwards or sideways?

Any advice greatfully accepted.

I would stick with the 400d as it is a far newer camera than the 10d, which was replaced by the 20d in late 2004.

The 10d is a good camera but if you are happy with the size of the 400 you should keep it.

Apart from the size being nicer and being stronger, I'd regard a 10d as being a backward step.

The 10D is now 5 generations old (10D - 20D - 30D - 40D - 50D)
The 400D is only 2 generations old ( 400D - 450D)

Thanks for the advice. It's pretty much confirmed what I was thinking.
Just wanted to be sure. The 10D did feel nice though.

If it were a 20D then it would be a fair swap, but if he's trying to swap a 10D for your 400 then he is trying one on.

I had the 10D, and the 400D is a much better camera in every way except the size. Plus a 10D won't take EF-S lenses
