400D or 30D for beginner?

A friend of mine is looking to get his first DSLR with the intention of shooting mountain biking.

His budget is around £250ish for body and lens, so I was thinking of recommending either a used 400D or 30D.

I'm pointing him towards Canon as I and a few others use Canon and therefore we'd be able to offer help with the camera (lol limited as our knowledge may be!) and let him borrow lenses.

Thing is, which would be better for him as a beginner, and also for the subject matter he intends to shoot?

I'd love to hear any opinions!
 
30d for rugged work no question. He will lose out on weight but the gains are worth it.
 
What the others have said 30D. But I did start with a 400D and there is nothing wrong with it, great little camera.

30D build quality is far superior, if he had a 400D and a 30D in front of him for the same price I know which one he would be picking!
 
Yep like the others have said the 30d would be my choice , however the 400d does have a bigger screen which could be important to some.

They're the same size.

I've not noticed any difference in build quality between the 30D and 300D; maybe the 400D was a step backwards.
 
The 30D has the magnesium alloy body whereas the 400D (and 300D) have a plastic body.

No, the 30D is 8mp, the 400D is 10mp.

That might not matter but one thing that would matter to me is the max shutter speed... 30D=1/8000, 400D=1/4000.
