400D or Panasonic FZ18

Please help me decide what to do.

  1. In Spring 2008 I bought my first camera, the highly acclaimed Panasonic FZ18.
  2. Wanting to reach further for wildlife photography, in summer 2008 I purchased my first DSLR, a Canon 400D to which I later added a battery grip.
  3. From this point on the FZ18 went into the cupboard coming out for not more than 200 frames since then and now. I like the ability to shoot video but use it only very rarely, so the camera comes out when I exercise the ability to pack something light and more compact than a lensed & gripped dslr. Again, very rarely and if I didn't have the FZ18 I'd either find pocket space for the DSLR plus 50mm prime and remove the battery grip or simply not bother.
  4. Seeking an upgrade from the 400D, I am now planning to invest in a 40D which will be used for 98%+ of all my photography. I expect that a grip will also appear.

The decision to be made is whether to dispose of both of my current cameras, or just one and, if so, which one. Can you help me to decide please?

Here's the background:

I don't go out on photo expeditions but always take my camera with me when we go out for walks in town and country, and any other outing where a photo opportunity might arise. I shoot, for my own enjoyment, portraits, landscapes, macro and wildlife, I'll have a go at anything which catches my eye in fact.

I've invested in a good set of L lenses and keep a few non L lenses including a nifty fity f1.8 mk1.

I have decided against upgrading to a full frame sensor such as a 5D.

Almost always I'd rather have a dslr in my hand than a P&S (though the FZ18 is far more than a P&S)

I'm not minded to set off for a walk with my wife & family and 2 camera bodies. A shoulder bag with a variety of lenses probably but 2 bodies has no appeal for me.

My wife is not interested in taking photos other than the occasional snap of me.

I don't believe that I need two cameras, let alone 3. For those extremely lightweight moments, there is always the mobile phone camera as a tiny, tiny backstop.

The obvious individual issues seem to be

The 400D and grip would release more capital then the FZ18.

The FZ18 is smaller.

The FZ18 gives me video if/when I need it.

Neither 400D or FZ18 are battery compatible with the 400D (nor is the 400D battery grip).

Both Canons use the same CF card format.

The 400D would give me a two-body capability if ever I needed it.

So, any ideas folks? What haven't I considered? Which one should I sell or should I sell both and why?

Mods: I'm not fishing here. Once I've decided what to do a proper FS thread will be posted.

if i was you, find a relative or friend and see if there iinterested in the fz18 as a gift

Blimey, I wish my dad/uncle/mate was up to acts of generosity of such magnitude. As it is I pretty well have to sell one thing at the moment to release some equity before I can move onto the next. I'll be glad when the new job starts next week.

As it is I'm going to sell the most excellent bridge camera, the Panasonic FZ18 now, and probably the even more excellent DSLR body 400D quite soon after the most wonderful upgrade body the 40D arrives. I'm just not a 2 camera person. Now rifles I can't collect enough of!

My camera is currently away for repair.

If I had not sold my old body I would still be able to go out shooting and would not be so irritable when the weather is 'perfect shooting condition'

My vote goes with keep your 400D as a backup.

Update: Panasonic sold on EBay. Result.

Richard,

I can be irritable whatever the weather so maybe you're right!
