Hi all new here and new to photography too.

I have a ? i own a Canon 400D and was wondering about some settings. In the menu i have a setting called picture style and i have a few options, I was wanting to no if i should use the neutral setting and alter with computer software.

I like to see bright colours in my pictures so im not sure where to go on this, I am interested in portrait and landscapes.

I was also wondering about the colour space setting should i use sRGB or Adobe RGB.

P.S, is there a way you can set the camera in to get rich coulours in my pics i.e, shutter speeds, apature settings?....

Thanks, Kevin.

Picture styles only affect jpgs - if you're shooting raw then the resulting raw file is unaffected by the picture style. Although, as a twist on this, the view on the camera lcd screen is affected.

If you're shooting jpgs, then just play around and experiment to see what you like by upping contrast and saturation.

For most purposes, use sRGB and make sure your software is set to sRGB too. If you don't know why you do need it, then you don't need to use Adobe RGB.

Hi Kevin

Adobe RGB is an expanded colour space useful for commercial and professional printing and can reproduce a wider ranger of colours. Canon recommends against using this colour space if your images will be displayed mainly on your computer screen or output by your personal printer. sRGB matches closely the colours your printer will output. Try using the portrait and landscape setting on the camera. May I recommend a book titled 'Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / 400D by David Busch ISBN13: 978-1-59863-456-3. It's a more comprehensive manual to your 400D than the manual that comes with it. I borrowed it from our local library.

Just to add that (as per the OP) Picture Styles control colour, contrast, sharpness and saturation. They do not affect shutter speed and aperture which primarily control exposure and also alter the image in other, different ways. These are controlled by Scene Modes (or by setting M, Av, Tv, P etc).

Richard.
