400d upgrade

hello just bought my first camera a couple of weeks ago and im already starting to find its limits especially in low light and night time pictures. My question is what is a good upgrade from the 400d? I believe the iso only goes to 1600 on the 400d which is not enough most of the time. thanks paul
 
Before looking at the camera, what lens are you using?

It may be that you need a lens that is more able in low light before looking at the body?
 
i have a 70-200 f2.8. I thought that should have been enough? I can get by but the images are not perfect
 
Generally, yes, that should indeed be enough!

In which case you have options... if you like the current size of your camera then the 500D and 550D both offer improvements in the high ISO area. Moreso in the 550D.
Otherwise you can start looking at the higher models, depending on what you shoot.

What sort of situations are you shooting, and did you have a budget in mind?

I will be mainly shooting motorsports but as you will know sometimes the light can fade quite bad but lately its been struggling when I tried it at karting track at night with a floodlit track and also at the indoor motorcycle show when light was at a minimum it just got by on max iso. As for price range nothing silly amounts as I have just started but also don't mind buying second hand. I will also use it for party's and things occasionally. Thanks
 
I'd suggest either a 550d or a 60d:

550d if you like the size your current camera

60d if you'd prefer something slightly larger, with dual wheels for easier control and articulated screen.

I'd suggest going to a shop to handle both (you could try a 650d if they don't have a 550d - it is a later model but same size)
 
550D is a far better performance ISO wise if you need that sort of thing.

Indoor and winter action stuff is going to really struggle with lots of kit though - most important thing there is going to be a fast lens then ISO.

My 550D is OK up to 1600 with some post and borderline usable at 3200 with more post processing provided im not cropping.

You might want to consider a 7D or similar for the better focus system (and same iso performance as the 550D) for your usage though.
