I've been using my 400d for a few months now and Im finding that its not heavy enough for me at all, it doesnt feel very stable.

I was going to buy a grip for the camera but have thought about maybe selling the 400d and using the money for the grip to put towards a 30d or maybe a 20d?

Now I know it would be a step backwards in technology but would it be worth it?

What are the advantages/disadvantages between the three bodies?

the 30d is essentially a 20d with a few minor tweeks (larger LCD), so you could save a little money there.

build quality on the xxD range is better, bigger size, magnesium vs plastic. AF system is better, as is the FPS if youre into sports. sure youre losing MP's but unless youre doing large blow ups then thats not really an issue.

personally id go for a xxD over a xxxD every time.
 
The xxD series is of much better built quality than the xxxD series. Its aimed at the semi pro/serious amateur photographer- rather than the amateur.
 
I think I'll look into getting a 30d/20d then. What sort of prices should I be looking at?
 
I think I've seen 20Ds on here for around £200..
 
i know it doesnt make any difference to how the camera feels or performs but what glass are you using?
 
Fezzr makes a good point, the glass is important as well. And may be worth the investment there instead.

Personally I have handled the xxxD's but have always opted for xxD, going from a 20D to 30D to 40D, back to a 30D and now back at a 40D, I still love my 20D though I must admit.

And with the same glass on the front there is very little difference.

The 400D is a good camera though!
 
I had 2x20D for some time, still have one of the 20D's. A good price is about £200 depending on condition.
 
my 20D is a trooper, i thought i was actually going to kill it the other weekend when it got soaked in the rain but it soldiered on with a few misfires and ERR99's.. not that id recommend soaking it, i was using a rain cover but it rained so much there was just as much water inside as out.
 
okay so lens arent bad, what sort of photography do you do?
If you like landscapes and still life, or motorsport is going to make a difference.
Like someone else has mentioned do you like making big posters or generally not bother with prints etc etc

i think to people the only downside between them is the smaller screen, which on an DSLR doest play anything like the same role as a compact camera so not really the big deal people make it out to be.
 
I like still life and landscapes but do occasionally do some sports photography
 
I have a 350D purchased from new nearly 3 years ago. Loved it to bits until my mate offered me his 20D.
350D is now a backup body and hasnt been out of the bag since buying the 20D.
 
I used to have a 300D and now have a 40D.. and I know that's an upgrade in technology, too, obviously. But simply judging by handling, feel and the whole experience I'd always go with a xxD over a xxxD now.

Im going to put my 400d up for sale now and go about looking for a 20D or 30D!
 
I have the opportunity to swap my 400D body for a 20D body. Is this a worth while deal?
 
not sure, have a look on ebay for completed sales for 400d and 20d should give you an idea, 400D is a bit newer than the 20d so may be worth a bit more still?

Doesnt look like he wants to add any cash to the deal, Think I'll just have to put mine up in the classifieds!
