Hi there, played around a bit today with a friends Olympus E-410 and really enjoyed the size and weight of it in comparison to my 400D. Most of my photography tends to be travel and whilst doing outdoor activities and it's very tempting to change.

Are there any Olympus users/four-thirds users on here?

Is it worth the swap? Differences in image quality? Anything to bear in mind?

Thanks :)

There are a fair few oly users about. Good quality kit lenses. The 410 is a very compact camera so really suits people with small hands.

The disadvantage would seem to be the supply of third party and second hand kit. The 14-54 is a good lens - would that be wide enough for you (bearing in mind the crop factor means that the 14 is prob equiv of the 18 on the canon kit).

I have not owned canon or nikon so cant compare.

Just bought a 410 with twin lens for £170 from Currys, still on the shelves at £290, i went into my local store with print out from PC World, as they have it at £170, and they did a price match.

I came very close to buying an oly before going with canon, the thing that swayed it for me was the lack of an affordable good quality ultra wide angle.

Cracking price mate, for a cracking outfit and both are ED lenses, some of the best kit lenses on the market. Enjoy.

Just waiting on the memory card to arrive now, then it will be time to make my brain explode, it is my first DSLR and although a basic one, can see many a frustrated hour.

Think it depends on the Currys, one of my local ones has really bad customer service and will not budge on anything(even when talking nicely to them), the one i got the camera from, i asked about price match, the guy said, it's a discontinued model, we can do it for you.

Lucky really, as was going to get the one with 1 lens a couple of days before, but they sold out.......:clap:

All the Currys managers around here have said it's a PC World exclusive and refused to match it. It's gone from both the PC World and Currys sites now too :(

The E-420 twin lens kit and lightweight 35mm Macro is my go everywhere carry about kit, it all fits in a tiny bag and you can carry it about all day without knowing its there and sometimes I'll just put the 25mm pancake lens on and bung it in my jacket pocket...great little camera :)

Currys in Wimbledon has at least one, i was in the shop earlier and one was on the shelf, i would have a word, was told it is now discontinued, so they will want to get rid of it.

I'm working (part-time) in currys atm and i'll tell you any deals like that will literally last 1-2 days before we sell out. Also the terms for the price match, afiak, are must be in stock in both stores (so a) we can sell you one and b) the other store is prepared to sell at that price and havent just left a wacky price on their site) and the store must be within 10 miles, and not online.

I currently run a Nikon and two Olympus 4/3rds cameras. It would not be fair to say that my Olys are better than the Nikon as they are totally different cameras. My Nikon D70s is 5 yrs old and is still a very able camera. I can only say that 4/3rds photography offers many advantages to conventional format cameras, such as lighter lenses with edge to edge image sharpness due to parallel light beams passing through telecentric lenses to the sensor. The 4/3rds crop factor is x2, which means that an Olympus 300mm lens is the 35mm camera equivalent to 600mm, whereas a Nikon 300mm lens has a crop factor of x1.6, which is the 35 mm equivalent of 480mm. There is a wealth of info to be had by Googling 4/3rds format.
