403 error and how to resolve it?

No
I have been having a problem with access to one website where I forgot my password > go the new temp password > went through the set new password step > got 403 Error page

Both phone and email comms with the organisation appeared to be going OK to resolve it.......to then get an email telling me the website is fine but the issue is with web server and that I need to make changes (to the web server?) to correct the 403 Error.

That last reply added a link to an external tech blog page with a video and text instructions as to how to do it including making changes to the htaccess file.................it is their web server, I am a customer.......... :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

I have replied pointing the above out asking just what & why have he/they passed the problem back to me...................and requesting that he/they escalate the matter! Not that the escalation should have been done by now!

Edit ~ I have also cleared the cookies & the cache for that website and it had no effect :(

A 403 error is a Forbidden error which means you do not have permission to view the page.

You can try clearing your cache and cookies for that website and see of that helps but if that's doesn't resolve it it's a problem on their end.

Yes, as mentioned I have cleared the cookies & cache for that website and that had no effect.

I think I have found the email address of the CEO and am sorely tempted to forward my email to him.

Have you tried a different browser? Probably it will not help but is easy to do.
I have had sites before that did not like Firefox but were OK with Edge and then a few days later Firefox would open them OK

Once in a while something goes wrong with how it is all routed and it can take a day or two to resolve in stages, maybe you already gave it a day or two but often as not going back next day all is resolved.

You might also try accessing by mobile phone hotspot so it goes by different DNS or whatever.

I have been using MS Edge for some time without issue, including with this website. Including when I had an earlier need to do a password reset

The issue first started Tuesday last week, so over a week ago.
I would prefer not to access secure (financial) websites using my phone.. .......none too sure my mobile contract allows "hotspot tethering" ??? Will have check & see :)
Edit ~ found it in the phone's settings......will give it a go.

PS on Monday 4th December when I tried again, whilst still awaiting a resolution, I got a 'holding page' with a maintenance notice for a stated period of a few hours on 29th November!!! This oddity alone IMO points to some backend work being done that "broke" something.

PPS oh, the 403 Error page is a Cloudfront page.

I have just tried by using the mobile phone as the hotspot and this made no difference to the problem.

So, when I hear back I will be able to confirm that neither the clearing of cookies & data cache nor using the Mobile Hotspot to use alternate DNS have made a difference......actually thinking about it I will let them know now....more grist for their mill !

As it’s a cloudflare page you’re seeing are you sure your not connecting through a VPN or something. Cloudflare could be blocking you based on country perhaps? Or just because you’re using a VPN

I echo the poster who suggested trying a different browser. I'm also a Firefox and Edge user and some features of my bank's website won't work with them. I've found Chrome or a Chrome-based browser such as Opera usually works. Presumably the Chuckle Brothers who code their website only use Chrome when testing...

CloudFront is Amazon's content delivery network, so this is a good shout, I know you can set it to geo restrict.

Two suggestions for Edge:
  1. Try and "InPrivate" window.
  2. If you aren't already connecting through a VPN, try connecting through a VPN.

No, no VPN and as mentioned it was working fine until I locked myself out by mis remembering my password 3 times and needing it reset.

I and the company in question are UK based.

The website itself is accessible and navigable, the error is occuring in the authentication of the login section to access the user portal.

Cloudflare and Cloudfront are not the same thing.

if you are using chrome then go to the three dots at top right and the dropdown lists passwords are under" Google password manager"

Using Edge, which I know is very Chrome like/based.

I do see Google(?) password manager popup and cancel/ignore it as I have no wish to save passwords like that, let ones associated with financial websites.

I did not realise. I thought the OP had just misspelled or had it autocorrected.

I've used Cloudflare before and know you can block visitors based on country. Not sure if thats possible with cloudfront.
It is possible to geo restrict with CloudFront, it will return a 403 if your IP address is deemed to be outside the allowed area.

Try to contact the website provider it seems to be related to access deny or IP blocked case at their end.. Can also be related to cloudflare. Only the website tech team can get this fixed for you.

Yes, as mentioned I have been in touch by phone & emails and now hopefully has been escalated rather than, apparently, being fudged in the responses so far!

Their website is broken. Eventually they may fix it. This will be largely unrelated to any emails your send them.

I think it is likely to be a blacklisted/geo-restricted IP address issue, rather than a site issue, as it would be pretty noticeable to the site techs of a UK-based site if CloudFront was blocking all UK-based IP addresses.

An update of sorts.... :( NB the 403 Error page is indeed a CloudFront page

I cleared the Cookies & Cache for the webpage , I also as suggested above used my Mobile as Hotpsot to bypass my ISP IP and neither made any difference....and reported this to the company.

Their recent reply says that the IT team can fine nothing wrong and try another browser such as Chrome
I have just done this and it made no difference :headbang:  I have emailed to get some definitive tech feedback i.e. is there not a failed attempt/request blocked log that will tell them exactly why I it is failing??? NB the 403 Error page has a unique identity on it.

As all your good experience insights above, such an error is entirely in the lap of the company and its website team....I have done all the tests they requested of me. In the last email I sent just now I did not state that others more in the tech field than me have said that it is their problem and theirs to explain the solution!

You don't have any kind of DNS / adblocker software setiup like PiHole or anything like that that routes your traffic through your own DNS server?

May also be worth check what DNS server you are using. If you're not running something like PiHole then you'll be using your ISP's DNS server or you could be using Google or Open DNS. May be worth trying to change that and see what happens.

Google is 8.8.8.8
Open DNS is 1.1.1.1

No Ad blockers in use
Using the ISP DNS server addresses
Note ~ as I also tried via the Mobile Hotspot, would that not be different DNS server(s) to my ISP?

It should be. A VPN would be another way to rule it out. I use Windscribe's (free) browser plug in when I need to test sites from outside the UK.
