40D / 7D

Hi guys,

I currently have a canon 40d with a 17-55 2.8 lens, and I was looking at going for the 70-200 when I come back off my holiday

However, I've been using a friends 7D with 24-105 and I can't believe how much sharper the shots that I have taken seem to be?

Is this just because the LCD is better on the 7D, that the shots look much better? Or is the 24-105 better than my 17-55?

When the shots are downloaded onto my computer will there be much in it?

Should I go for the 70-200 f4 or go for the 7D?

The 7D has a much newer much higher resolution LCD, so shots will look sharper.
The should be more detail in the 7D shots when blown up larger (nearly double the resolution of the 40D), but not a massive amount.

The review screen resolution on the 40D is rubbish compared to the 7D, it's the one thing that really diassapointed me when I got mine. I have learnt to judge shapness looking at the fuzzy mess though so now I find it's less of a problem.

I compared a few shots from a friends 7D with my 40D and yes the 7D shots have more detail but at normal viewing sizes not as much difference as you might expect.

You have not said what you use your 40D for, if you need 8fps, the improved AF and HD video then go for it.

If you don't don't need the above and don't print large then go for the 70-200L you will not be dissapointed its the best bit of kit I have ever bought

I went from a 40D to 7D and found the 7D much better, greater detail, better high ISO handling and also the ability to crop, which was limited by the 40D's 10mpx. The AF on the 7D also kicked the 40D right in the Julies.

Having made the jump from a 40D to a 7D myself, and it was worth upgrading, I'd consider getting the lens you want first. You'll still have a very capable camera and two of canons best lenses.
In theory lenses 'should' last you over the lifetime of several camera bodies.

I too have recently changed from 40D to 7D. The 7D produces much sharper images with significantly better high ISO noise. If you compare images at the same size though, I don't think you'll see much difference in detail. The images at 1600ISO are amazing compared with the 40D. Having said that, I would always advocate geting a sharper lens before upgrading the body. Your 17-55mm should be a match for the 24-105mm. I suppose it all boils down to whether you need what the 7D offers more than you need the 70-200mm. I have the F4 non-IS version and it worked beautifully on the 40D.

I own a 40D but use a mates 7D sometimes. The thing I find with the 40D is its very hard to tell the difference between a ok shot and a super sharp shot because the LCD is sooo poor. You have to get them on the computer before you can check and some turn out much sharper than they originally appeared. The 7D is the opposite, it makes every shot look super sharp, which then sucks when you get them on the pc and realise some are mis focused/soft etc. Printing at A3 I haven't really noticed a huge difference between the 40D and 7D shots.

I own both camera's and have to say the 7d is a far better camera but I think
the lens being used is far more important.
7d with a sigma 24-70 2.8 is ok but nowhere near as good as my 40d with my 70-200 2.8l attached.
Mind you, stick my 28-70l on the 7d and the raw files are incredible.
