40d and 400d, same sensor?

Hi i'm wondering whether or not to upgrade from my 400d to a 40d. I know the 40d is better sealed against the elements and that it has a much higher FPS rate than the 400d. The main thing is for me, is it the same sensor :shrug:

I have my 400d chipped to go to 3200 iso so unless it's a different sensor on the 40d or unless it does something else that i've missed then i can't really justify the upgrade and i'll probably save my monies for something better like a 50d or a second hand 5

so does anyone know, does the 40d have better noise handling? or is just the same sensor as the 400d but with iso expansion?

40D/400D do not share the same sensor
50D - noise - jury is still out on that - depends on camera settings, 50D comes with some set to 'on' and need to be set to 'off' if you are going to use RAW.

50D - sealing, see my post about Wisley Glass house today, I'm not convinced the 50D is up to the job, despite being told it was better sealed than the 40D.

thakyou matt, might just have to have another think about the 40. I just found some iso 12800 shots from the new 1D MKV - amazing! but well out of my price range

40D sensor is miles better than 400D. It is 14 bit vs 12 bit, and high ISO noise handling is far better. ISO800 is still fairly clean on 40D (RAW converted in LR2), while I wouldn't set 400D above ISO200. Body size is another matter, but if you fancy fast lenses 50D might be a better option given you can do AF adjustment.

not if its set up/tweaked to be right, it also has more pixels

I'd go for the upgrade (any of them tbh) as the 40d is better built than the 400, the IQ is better, noise ect and the AF is miles ahead

40 vs 50 vs 5 classic is a decision to be based on your interests and budget

maybe, but even then it is complete rubbish. That is THE reason why I am looking for a 1 series body now. Decreasing 1Div prices should help to find some great deals.

Ever heard of Nikon D3 and D3s?! They are also same size and density, but that doesn't make them the same. Same goes for Canons.

irrelevant, the OP isn't looking at the 1 series bodies doesn't have the funds, lenses, or skills to use one to its full advantage

2nd hand 1D mk2s are priced along with 40D so this is rather relevant.

but the glass you need to get good results on a 1d is different to the glass you need on a 40d, the lack of pop up flash can be an issue as it is occasionally useful if you don't have a speedlight and the comment on difficulty stands

Are you telling that rubbish glass on 40D is OK and on 1D2 is not?

Well It doesn't have to be expensive. Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 is rather cheap and can give decent results; or Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is cheaper and good as long as it doesn't see the FF corneres (1.3x should be good). For OP that would be a great start.

I am sure OP is NOT and he can read the manual and understand it. It is only a dSLR, it is not like setting up a NMR spectrometer.

Any more problems?

The auto modes are bloody handy when you learn and a 1d doesn't have them. I'm just saying the learning curve is easier on a 40d than a 1d, the 40 also shares many controls with a 400d

I moved from the 30D to 50D
I think the 50D is very good you just need to change a few factory setting to off and you get good low noise

None taken! although i'm sure given the funds/lenses i could find my way around a 1 series nicely

I have had a good google and found that the sensor on the 40d is an upgrade over the 400d due to improved microlens design.

I also like the idea of a bigger viewfinder and lcd screen

i've got a biochemistry degree so i could probably get away with that as well

I'm not really interested in a 1 series body at the moment they're a bit pricey and i'm nowhere near pro standard and i don't shoot sports (and when i do it'll be mountain biking with a bit of strobist thrown in!) so i'm not after shooting BIF's with massive lenses or anything like that so i think a 40d would be right up my street
