40D dead :(

Just got my 7D luckily but lent it to my mate and when we put his CF in it did this.

Any ideas without sending it to get fixed for a price

How long is the warranty / when did you buy it?

Might be worth sending an email or letter to canon to see if they will do it for free, always worth a try.

Wouldn't you need the card to update the firmware?

I think you can update the firmware with the camera wired to the PC (have done mine before, and have only recently got a card reader).

It sounds like a problem with communication between the camera and card - might be worth checking to make sure none of the pins in the CF slot are bent, although I wouldn't fancy trying to fix them if they were

Did you check to see if a pin is bend in the CF card slot?

I will try update firmware with it plugged in tommorow. And if no luck i'll email canon. Service centre only round the corner.

Why?
I doubt if this is a CF card issue.
SD on the other hand is slower, and has less structural rigidity, they are simply too small to be strong enough to protect the PCB and chips inside (try flexing one!).

Nothing wrong with CF card as the same one works fine in 7D just 40D it doesn"t like
