Right i had the camera out last night and it started giving me err99 message, check the lens contacts and removed the batts (both of them) and still did the same.

come to the conclusion when the camera is held in a portrait fashon the shutter makes a funny sound when firing. tried in landscape and it only gave err99 once with the funny sound shutter.

i did some searching on here and noticed Shutter replacement are around the £150 mark.

Is it worth me going the repair route or putting some cash aside for a 7D and sell this body as spares?

am I being drastic?

I am a little rattled as i love my 40D and never had a complaint about it.

thats extreme. its not the shutter button. its the actual shutter thing inside the body that makes a strange sound just before the error 99

have you tried all the fix's,wet cleaning of lens contacts, firmware update, and maybe any other contacts that can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and a swab.

I bought a couple of cameras on the offchance they would work but both displayed this after around 40-50 clicks and were beyond my repair mode so I re-sold as parts on the bay and made my money back as the cost of a new shutter at £130 was good but the company said once the shutter had lived its lifespan then other things will start to go wrong, I would sell it as parts as bits for 40Ds are quite scarce and you will supprise yourself how much you can earn from a camera sold as spares, if you can strip it down and list each part this makes the most money as the main board alone to an insurance company is worth £150..........look at it like this, the good parts alone would sell for around £500 yet the whole camera as spares would be lucky to fetch £150 or you could go down the new shutter route and find the mainboard packs in in a weeks time due to it being de-soldered and re-soldered, its a hell of a job to fit a shutter yourself like I was going to do but after seeing videos on how to do it I opted for............make back what I paid but I sold them with an honest description.........NOT WORKING:thumbs:

tried all contacts and will give the error without a lens attached, i will get two or three images then the error. firmware is the latest edition,

tried all my cf cards and all batts still the same.

its only got 18k on the millage clock too.

where do you send for a valuation and error checks?

My experience with the err99 is that only a new shutter will sort it out. afaik this was a problem with early 40d, they were replaced under warranty for those that developed the problem early and later models upgraded after the problem became know to Canon.

If you want it fixed, I'd rec Canon Elstree. Chances are it will be done under a fixed price (think it's around £127) - give them a bell
