Hi all,
Was out today for the first time with my new 40D and noticed that the viewfinder seems to have a very grainy look to it, which seems to get more grainy the further out the lens (18-55) is zoomed. Is the 40D supposed to be like this, ot is there a fault? Ive only ever used an A200 prior to this.
Thanks guys

My new (to me) 30D is the same.First time I look thru it, bring used to a D70s, I was shocked at the grainess and darkness but after a few days I don't notice it. Could be a fault, I don't know

The matte of the viewfinder screen get more visible at lower light.

With none constant aperture lenses, for example the 18-55, the aperture changes from f/3.5 to f/5.6 across the zoom range. As the lens is as wide as it will go until you take your shot this will cause the viewfinder to get darker, and it to appear grainier, at longer zooms with this type of lens.

Can I be daft and ask what exactly everyone means by seeing the focusing screen?

Not daft at all. Focusing screens have a very fine pattern of tiny facets etched into them which helps them to catch the light and provide a nice bright image, as well as aid positive focusing. When light levels are low you can tend to see those patterns in the screen which is no doubt what you are seeing.
