40d Or 450d???

No
Hi was just looking for some info about the two cameras! (Totally new to the subject)

My initial idea was to wait for the 450D with 18-55mm lens to be released as i have a budget of £700.

I have just come across Canon's 'cash-back' offer which would allow me to get the 40D for £600.

I then would have to spend £XX amount on a lens?? (For all round general use, although i study architecture and enjoy landscape pictures).

Can anyone suggest if getting a 40D is better than a 450D (from the specifications)??

And a suitable lens all round lens??

Thanks
Rich

I've gone from a 400D to a 40D and don't regret it at all (well, except for having no money...).
The 450D shares the 40D's Digic III and has a higher resolution, but the 40D is a much nicer camera to work with than the 400D in that all the controls are where you want them and it's much chunkier and easier to grab on to than the entry level models.

Good all-round lens? Can't comment on quality but I think the Tamron 18-250mm will pretty much cover everything! Find it here. Reviews I've read for Tamrons seem fairly positive.
The kit lenses often pop up on Ebay and on the For Sale section on here, so if you go body only you could probably grab a kit lens fairly cheap.

there is a review section on here where CT has reviewed the 40D. Im saving up for a new cam, was either going to buy the 450d or the 40d, after reading CT's review im now saving for the 40D.

Cant help you much about what lens to buy ***

You could easily grab a kit lens for well under £50 - and then maybe back it up as soon as funds allow with something like a Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG Macro (Around the £100 mark second hand) which would be the range covered nicely. As a 30D user, I would urge you to go for the 40D for sure - I'm considering that upgrade path myself to be honest!

Cant comment on the 450D, but I do have a 40D. I can recommend it. Especially if you have large(ish) hands. I do. The 450D feels too small.

Thanks for the quick replies!!

My friend has the 400D and i found that a good size, until i felt the 40D in jessops earlier!

The 450D has a 12.1m pixels, whereas, the 40D has 10.1m pixels. Does this make much difference?

The mega pixels dosen't make that much difference unless you are thinking of cropping the image by quite a lot if i had the choice i would get the 40d because its a good all round camera.

2 million pixels sounds a lot, but it isn't actually much at all when it comes to increased image quality. You'd need to quadruple the number of pixels to actually double the image resolution.

Where pixel density due to increased pixels really becomes apparent though is when drastic cropping of an image is required, which is often the case with small birds and critters. The greater the pixel density, the more you can crop the image and still leave enough pixels actually constituting your main subject to not impact too much on image quality.

So for a camera to stick behind long lenses for wildlife photography, the 450D will be the best performer for a while. Strange really considering that it's the entry level camera - it all seems a bit the wrong way round.

Having said that though, the better AF system of the 40D will come into it's own with action shots and birds in flight, not to mention it's higher fps frame rate.

It's never that straightforward is it? :D

I had my 10D stolen last week, so picked up a 20D for a shoot and to use as a backup camera while I wait for my 40D to arrive.

Having used a 350D, I wouldn't trust myself with it. One serious knock and you'll rip it in half. The build quality on the x0D range is far superior to the next range down, and the IQ is noticibly (IMO) better. And as has been pointed out, the AF and capture rate is worth its weight in gold.

As for a lens, you could go for an all purpose wide angle through telephoto, use it for six months to a year, then upgrade to a couple of more specialised lenses which cover wide angle and telephoto independently, without as much compromise as the all purpose, and never use the all purpose again. For my money, I'd recommend the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 which at around £200 is a great piece of glass, with a good range for landscapes and architecture, and very fast. You might miss the longer ranges, but you're going to get sucked into buying new glass before too long, so why compromise on a piece of glass that you'll never use after you're bought your second or third lens?

Either way, enjoy!

well i have decided on getting the 40D going to order it this evening!

Can anyone recommend any good shops to buy cameras from on the net?? I was told that Park Cameras is a good shop??

Try Kerso (PM him here .. search out his thread). Generally the cheapest around

As a 40D owner it'd be a 40D for me anyday. The increased resolution on the 450D is not an issue really and could produce more noise than the 40D anyway. 40D is nicer to hold, more solid, better weather sealing, faster, better metering.

It also looks much better with a huge lens stuck on the front of it!

Shop around and you'll find a 40D body + 17-85mm IS lens for less than you might think. Try www.mifsuds.co.uk as they offer the lens "unboxed" which means it came in a kit and they take it out and charge less for it. Did it with me ewhen I bought mine but ended up getting money off equivilent to cashback as well.

If you're gonna spend the money make the right choice. Cashback is on till June!

Well, I bounced my 300D a few times from tables on to paving slabs, from my shoulder onto the floor and it survived well, but I know what you mean.

True (I have a 40D) also comparing it to the 400D it has a lot more useful functions in the menu

What we don't know yet is the quality of the pixels on the forthcoming 450D. Images may be quite noisy if it's a first generation 12.1MP sensor.

Bit too early to assess this, but as people have pointed out, there's a large difference between 3.5fps and 6.5fps. Depends what you're intending to shoot, but for wildlife and sports, a 40D will be an invaluable tool.

Cheers, Mark

Even though the 450D is 12MP, the quality is likely to be very similar to the 40D, pretty much identical, 2MP is nothing.

Also, the sensor on the 40D is still better even with fewer mega pixels, it will handle far better in low light situations and will handle noise at higher ISOs much better.

The 40D is alot better than the 450D. It's better becuase of build quality and size, better sensor, faster FPS (which as markta said, is actually awesome), three C-settings, better AF.

I went from a 400D to a 40D and have no regrets whatsoever. I just wish I had started on a 40D instead of a 400D!

I actually saw that while I was scoping decent prices recently, and decided it was just too high risk. His 'paypal account is down' by all accounts, and stuff like that make me nervous, especially when the price is as good as that.

I saw one recently from a UK based powerseller for £599.99, which was incredible value as you'd pay more than that importing from HK, when you include import duties....I'll see if I can dig it up...

I have a kit lens that I can sell to you if you want something to get you started. It's had hardly any use so in as new condition.

Cheers for the info everyone!! Ordered the 40D with the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS lens yesterday! Cant wait now..... one prob parents said i have to wait for my birthday now (1 month away)
