40D or 500D?

Yes
A friend of mine is looking to upgrade from his 350D, he is asking me which one out of 40D or 500D?

Any suggestions?

Go to a shop and hold them! The xxD bodies have a different form factor to the xxxD bodies (larger), and an extra dial on the back that makes it much easier to adjust settings on the fly.

If he likes the feel of the 40D, I'd suggest going for that.

Agreed. Whilst my 40D makes my old 400D feel like a toy, some people prefer the smaller size of the xxxD series. I also personally feel the 15mp of the 500D and 50D are too much for an APS-C sensor but others disagree.

That's exactly how I would describe the change from a 350D to a 40D.

It coincided with a change to bigger lenses too, the EF-S 17-55 f2.8, the 70-200 f4L and the 100-400, all of which felt a bit unbalanced on the 350D (the 70-200 f4L not so much but the f2.8 would I think)

40D

Furtim i like for same reasons as you

always liked the bigger body with dial

I don't want to start a flame war or anything, but if he doesn't know whether to go from a 350d to a 500d or a 40d then why exactly is he looking to upgrade?

Is it just camera envy?

I'd have thought he must have some reasons to upgrade so look to see which camera solves whatever issues he has

Two different cameras, the 40d is built tougher, heaver and built to take a few knocks (not indistructable) with lots of menu options. The 500d is an extry level camera with a more basic menu, slower frame rate and not so strudly built, that said it is newer and has a more MP15 against 10mp for the 40d.
As others have said, best bet is try them both in the hand and see what feels right,

Why not go for a 50D? That's the same price as a 500D...

not sure where you're looking, but the 500d is a fair bit less than the 50d when i checked

the 500d has the digic 4 processor, the 15mp as discussed, and shoots HD video

Kerso does the 50D for £699... How much is the 500D?

I agree with this post.

The two cameras are really aimed at different types of user. Surely the best option is to find out which one offers what your friend needs.

i bought my 500D for £679.99 with lens

hasnt arrived yet though!
Well, but £20 more you could get a 50D with no lens, but to buy the 18-55mm IS second hand it's only about £40-£60.

I received my 50D today after using entry-level Canon SLR's for 1-2 years. It's a different league to be honest. It does make the 400D/450D feel like a toy.

If you need it for the video then fair enough, but if you don't then you're a fool for not getting the 50D IMO.

well its my first DSLR...i have no idea about photography so thought the 500D would be better for me. also...ill most likely be using the video too

im only used to using a cheapo camera from Aldi's lol

Just realised you are a girl -- I think you made the right choice...

Just kidding. I'm sure the 500D will do everything you're after!
