40D (S/h)or the 450D (New)

I am going to upgrade in the very near future.

I used to have a Nikon SLR so I am intending getting a DSLR to replace the Panny FZ3(3.1Mp) that I have been using

I have a good few M42 lenses (7x) and intend trying them out but I need to start somewhere and I am thinking of either a S/H 40D (Or 50d - price depending) or buying a new 450D in the January sales.


Which would be the best to start out with?

Which is going to give the best results JUST for taking pics.

What advantages does one have over the other?
 
The 500D is a damn good bargain at present, there's not only £30 cash back on it dropping the price to £469, but also a free manfrotto tripod & head!
It would be a better buy than a new 450D.

PS cameraworld has branches in Chelmsford and London, you need to visit a branch to get the free manfrotto, staff are fantastically helpful as well and they take gear in PX, just ring to check theyre interest before travelling..

The 50D is the best option s/h, though likely to cost a little more than the 500D, it does have a damn good feature set though.

So with the prices those two can be picked up for I wouldn't be bothering with the 40D or 450D.

Finally remember VAT goes up in January, so I doubt the sale bargains will be as good as buying before January

40D any day of the week. A good condition one should set you back £350ish on the classifed here and they are a country mile better than the 450d in terms of handling and autofocus. I sold my 450D for £280 and brought a £350 40D which was by far the best £70 spent on camera equiptment. The 450D is no worse in terms of image quality, it just feels like a toy compared to the 40D.
 
Try the cameras out to see which you like the feel of etc. A 450D may feel like a toy to some but i think it is a quality camera and can be bought at a very good price.
 
I would get the 40D, much better build quality than the 450D.
 
Would I be right in assuming that the 500D and the 450D are made of plastic whereas the 40D & 50D are magnesium?

And that the 40D & 50D dont have HD video like the 500D?


Is this what REALLY sets them apart but that a similar end result (photo quality wise) could be acheived by any of them?

I.e. apart from the feel of the camera and the extra gadgets on the ***D as opposed to the **D.

Thats one of those questions that I cannot easily answer.

Given the choice of NOTICEABLY superior quality photographs opposed to lesser quality with Vid then the answer would be no.

A very slight drop in pic quality with vid might be acceptable.

Remember, whatever I get will be far superior to the one currently in use.

I do have an HD vid recorder but having the two in one package might be useful one day but certainly not essential and definitely not at the cost of quality of photographs as I don't intend replacing the camera that I buy for a long time, if ever.
 
If your budget will stretch buy the 50D, if you can get one from the adds in here you know it will have been looked after (maybe) I went from the 400D to the 50D and it does feel a whole lot better, but then i do have bigger hands.

Go to a shop and try them all out and see what suits YOU.

I have held and played with both 50D and 550D.

Both different to my existing camera and both feel equally comfortable.

I could easily get used to either so the feel of them is'nt an issue.

The 50D is heavier but then more solid.

They are both similar but different so thats why I need to be more specific about the results.
