40d shutter speed

Have been playing about all day, and just realised that my camera would not go past a shutter speed of 1/250...

But I cant remember what setting I was on OR whether it was kit lens (18-55) or 50mm 1.8...

Why would this happen?

Do you have your flash on? The flash sync speed is 1/250th so maybe its that.

Is it in 'TV' mode?

The mode will have been either Av, Tv, or M.

And yes, I did have my speedlite on...

BUT, I can't recreate the issue now...!?!?

Sounds like Janice is correct with the speedlite. It will limit the shutter speed to 1/250 so put it back on and try taking a shot at 1/500th and see what happens.
